Elearning For Learners

The author identifies and outlines strategies that reach different kinds of online learners. The basic classifications of auditory and verbal learner (visual-textual, reflective/observational learner, visual-display learner, and applied-doer learner cover most styles without stepping on the toes of different learning theory practitioners. The language used in the text is easy to understand, relate to and useful in discussing course design to management and staff that are not cognizant of learning theories.

I have engaged in online courses in three major universities and without exception they exclusively served the verbal or visual-textual learners, and did not incorporate any "new" ideas in course delivery; even something as simple as podcasting. The online courses mirrored face to face courses and were simply dumping grounds for reading material, poorly mediated discussions and dysfunctional group projects. The online courses I engaged in mock the idea of 'a community of learning'. Curtis Bonk's work is the light showing the way out of the narrow mindless dungeons of higher academe. The R2D2 theory is not instructional design, but it should be an important element.

About the Author

Barbara A. Wilson is a clinical neuropsychologist who has worked in brain injury rehabilitation for 35 years. She has won many awards for her work including an OBE in 1998 and two lifetime achievement awards. Her publications include 19 books, over 270 journal articles and chapters and eight neuropsychological tests. She is the editor and founder of the journal Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, and in 1996 she founded the Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neuropsychological Rehabilitation.

About the Author
John G. Geer (PhD, Princeton University) is vice provost for academic and strategic Affairs, the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of Political Science, and co-director of the Vanderbilt Poll. Geer has published widely, including In Defense of Negativity, which won the Goldsmith Prize from the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University. Geer has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University and Princeton University. Geer teaches Introduction to American Politics, as well as specialty courses on elections and campaigns. His teaching has won numerous teaching awards at both Arizona State University and Vanderbilt University. Geer is a frequent commentator in the press, with appearances on all the major networks (e.g., Fox News, CBS Evening News, CNN), and he has been quoted in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the LA Times. He also has done interviews for major international outlets, such as BBC and Al Jazeera.

Wendy Schiller (PhD, University of Rochester) is a professor of political science, international and public affairs at Brown University (Twitter account @profwschiller). She was legislative assistant for Senator Daniel P. Moynihan, a federal lobbyist for Governor Mario M. Cuomo, a guest scholar and PhD fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a post-doctoral fellow at Princeton University. Jeffrey A. Segal (PhD, Michigan State University) is SUNY Distinguished Professor and chair of the political science department at Stony Brook University. He has served as Senior Visiting Research Scholar at Princeton University and held a Guggenheim Fellowship. Segal is best known, with Harold Spaeth, as the leading proponent of the attitudinal model of Supreme Court decision-making. Segal has twice won the Wadsworth Award for a book (with Spaeth) or article 10 years or older with lasting influence on law and courts. He has also won the C. Herman Pritchett Award (again with Spaeth) for best book on law and courts. His work on the influence of strategic factors on Supreme Court decision-making won the Franklin Burdette Award from APSA. With Lee Epstein, Kevin Quinn, and Andrew Martin, he won Green Bag's award for exemplary legal writing. He has also won a national award sponsored by the American Bar Association for innovative teaching and instructional methods and materials in law and courts.

Richard Herrera (PhD, University of California, Santa Barbara) is associate professor of political science and associate director for the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University. He directs the ASU Capital Scholars Washington, DC, Summer Internship program for ASU and coordinates the ASU-McCain Institute for International Leadership Internship Program. He has contributed articles to the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and State Politics and Policy Quarterly. His current research interests are focused on U.S. governors, their ideology, policy agendas, and representative functions. He teaches courses in American Politics, American Political Parties, and American Politics and Film.

The book did not come with the 1 term (6 months) Printed Access Card) (I Vote for MindTap) as advertised and I never could contact the company that sent the actual book. My daughter had to buy this through the school. I just returned the book following the directions,after the rental period was completed, so we will see if it was as easy as it said.

Brilliant and Concise Synthesis of the Best Success and Happiness Literature!

Professor Shell brings together a wealth of information from some of the greatest books on success, happiness, and positive psychology. Not only does he present all of this information in a clear and concise format, but he also does it in a way that actually integrates (ties together) the information so as to make a clearer and more illuminating whole.

Before reading this book, by pure coincidence, I had already read nearly all of the books Professor Shell references. Even though I had already read these books, I didn't have a clear grasp of how the different concepts and ideas fit together. If I could start all over, I would have saved myself a lot of time by starting with Professor Shell's book, and then digging deeper into the books he references based on the extent to which I wanted more answers (the books he references are all really good, too, in their own respects, but they are narrower in scope).

The other important thing that Professor Shell does in this book is bring a cautious and discerning eye to his survey of the best success and happiness literature. Think of him as a gold miner panning through dirt for little nuggets of gold: When the literature or research he cites contains questionable or dubious claims, he points it out, or provides an explanation for why something that sounds utterly preposterous might actually be be true for other psychological reasons.

Lastly, he uses great examples of historic figures to illustrate some of the ideas, ones I hadn't come across before in my own survey of the literature.

This is the first time I have written a review on Amazon before, and I am doing this out of a profound sense of gratitude and respect for Professor Shell, and for my own desire to spread these ideas.

Very helpful book if you're looking for the next act in your professional career or life

I am now in my 60s, and am looking for what to do next in life. This book is very helpful at helping navigate those tough questions. It attempts to help the reader answer two questions: 1) what is success in your life, and 2) how do you achieve it? It doesn't provide answers, but rather food for thought and some exercises to assist you in answering these questions. I'm getting a lot out of reading this. Well researched and written.

50+ success books later, this may be my favorite

Over the past 2 years, I've read 52 books in the genre of success/personal development. Roughly one book every two weeks, ranging from classics like Napoleon Hill's Think & Grow Rich to modern works like Gladwell's Outliers. That said, I definitely feel that I have a good grasp on the genre/what's out there.

Here's what you need to know: Springboard is BY FAR one of the best discourses on the topics of personal development & success that I have ever encountered.

STRENGTHS: It's not just about synthesizing what's already out there. Springboard helped provide me with new ways of thinking about my own definition of success far beyond the workplace, and also provided actionable exercises & steps to apply Richard Shell's unique perspectives. I was so inspired that I bought copies for my entire family.

WEAKNESSES: I also grabbed a copy of the audiobook to listen while driving. This book is definitely best as a hardcopy, as you can more easily follow and complete the valuable exercises/thought experiments that Shell proposes.

In my opinion, this book is an absolute MUST for any student of life, success, and business. I highly recommend it.
