A Newbery Honor Book

Joan Bauer's beloved Newbery Honor book--now with a great new look for middle grade readers!

When Hope and her aunt move to small-town Wisconsin to take over the local diner, Hope's not sure what to expect. But what they find is that the owner, G.T., isn't quite ready to give up yet--in fact, he's decided to run for mayor against a corrupt candidate. And as Hope starts to make her place at the diner, she also finds herself caught up in G.T.'s campaign--particularly his visions for the future. After all, as G.T. points out, everyone can use a little hope to help get through the tough times . . . even Hope herself.

Filled with heart, charm, and good old-fashioned fun, this is Joan Bauer at her best.

Amazon.com Review
Here's a book that's as warm and melty as a grilled Swiss on seven-grain bread, and just as wholesome and substantial. Ever since the boss promoted her from bus girl two and a half years ago when she was 14, Hope has been a waitress--and a darn good one, too. She takes pride in making people happy with good food, as does her aunt Addie, a diner cook extraordinaire. The two of them have been a pair ever since Hope's waitress mother abandoned her as a baby, and now they have come to rural Wisconsin to run the Welcome Stairways caf for G.T. Stoop, who is dying of leukemia. But he's not dead yet, as the kindly and greathearted restaurant owner demonstrates when he decides to run for mayor against the wicked and corrupt Eli Millstone.

As old-fashioned goodness lines up against the bad guys, the campaign leads Hope in exciting new directions: a boyfriend who is a great grill man, a new sense of herself and her mission as a waitress, and--when Addie and G.T. finally realize that they are meant for each other--the father she has always wanted. And all of it backed up with stuffed pork tenderloin, butterscotch cream pie, and the rhythm of the short-order dance.

Joan Bauer, who won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Rules of the Road, has served up a delicious novel in Hope Was Here, full of delectable characters, tasty wit, and deep-dish truth. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly
Bauer (Rules of the Road; Squashed) serves up agreeable fare in this tale of a teenage waitress's search for a sense of belonging. Sixteen-year-old Hope has grown used to the nomadic life she has built with her aunt Addie, a talented diner cook. She doesn't mind the hard work it takes to make a diner hum; she seems to have inherited a knack for waiting tables from the free-spirit mom (Addie's younger sister) who abandoned her years ago. But Hope would gladly give up always having to say good-bye to friends and places she loves. When Addie accepts a new job that takes the pair from Brooklyn to the Welcome Stairways diner in Mulhoney, Wis., Hope never could have imagined the big changes ahead of her. She and Addie shine in the small-town milieu and gladly offer to help diner owner G.T. Stoop, who is battling leukemia, run for mayor. Along the way, Addie and Hope both find love, and Hope discovers the father figure she has so desperately wanted. Readers will recognize many of Bauer's hallmarks hereAa strong female protagonist on the road to self-discovery, quirky characters, dysfunctional families, a swiftly moving story, moments of bright humor. Her vivid prose, often rich in metaphor (e.g., Hope's description of the Brooklyn diner: "The big, oval counter... sat in the middle of the place like the center ring in a circus"), brings Hope's surroundings and her emotions to life. The author resolves a few of her plot points a bit too tidily, but her fans won't mind. They're likely to gobble this up like so much comfort food. Ages 12-up. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-When it comes to creating strong, independent, and funny teenaged female characters, Bauer is in a class by herself and the 16-year-old waitress in this book is no exception. Hope Yancey and her Aunt Addie, a much-sought-after diner cook, have toured the country, one diner at a time. With each move, the teen leaves her mark, "HOPE WAS HERE," in ballpoint pen somewhere on the premises. Now in Mulhoney, WI, she has no idea that the residents of this small town will make their mark on her. G. T. Stoop, the Quaker owner of the Welcome Stairways, has leukemia, and while the disease can keep him from running the diner he loves, it can't keep him from running for mayor against a corrupt incumbent. Taking part in his campaign allows Hope to get to know Braverman, a fellow worker at the Welcome Stairways and G. T.'s greatest supporter. The mix of dealing with illness, small-town politics, and budding romance for both Hope and Addie is one that will entertain and inspire readers. Bauer tells a fast-paced, multilayered story with humor but does not gloss over the struggle of someone who is unable to trust, someone who has been left before, and who avoids getting close to anyone for fear of being left again. Teens who have come to expect witty, realistic characters and atypical (but very funny) story lines from Bauer's previous books will not be disappointed and new readers will be sure to come back for seconds.

How This Very Book Changed Me-Another Great Joan Bauer Read
By Alannah
Recommendation

'Hope Was Here' is an original, creative, meaningful novel. Hope Yancey's life is so realistic that it is hard to believe that it is a fiction story. It is like watching a movie that the actors are acting so well that it doesn't seem like they're even acting anymore. Joan Bauer wrote this story, so that you could reflect it into your own life. So that you could reflect hope into your life...
Personally, I though that at times the book had a little slow of a plot, but I don't dislike it because of that, because it is not an adventure or action story, but rather a story about life and people.
People that want to cry and laugh at the same time, people that want a story about ambition and hope, a story about people that are out there in the world and maybe just like them should read "Hope Was Here".

Protagonist vs. Antagonist

Hope Yancey has always been a very hopeful teenage girl, that's why she changed her name legally from 'Tulip' (the name her mother had given her) to Hope. She thought that having that name would make her have more hope because there are definitely things that make her need it in her life, moving around the United States constantly with her Aunt Addie, her mother that gave her to Hope's aunt when she was a sick, helpless baby, not having the slight idea who her father is. She is definitely the protagonist of 'Hope Was here'. Ten characteristics that make Hope the protagonist are:

compelling
courageous/vulnerable
hopeful
sympathetic/empathetic
relatable
a survivor
likable
honest (she has integrity)
tenacious (not giving up, determined)
patient

The antagonist of 'Hope Was Here' could be a person or an abstract idea.

A person: Eli Millstone, the mayor, is a perfect example of an antagonist, but he is not the only one... Millstone is the current mayor in Mulhoney, Wisconsin, where the biggest industry is diary. He gives the diary company tax breaks, he lets them take their trucks on roads where there are residents. Five words that characterize him are:

unfair
disloyal
greedy
conservative (not willing to be diverse)
corrupt

The abstract idea of an antagonist for the story could be reality, past, or life in general. Supporting points for antagonist:

Hope's mother left her when she was a sick baby of two pounds
She doesn't know who her father is
G. T. Stoop has leukemia and is running for mayor
G. T. Stoop loses the election for mayor
Braverman, the grill man at G. T. Stoop's diner, gets beat up by some other teenagers because he is campaigning for a man with leukemia

Hope changes from the beginning of the book to the end in a couple of different ways. Firstly, Hope is faced with her past as she campaigns for G.T .Stoop. Sometimes, we have to face something before moving on. At the end of the book, Hope has faced it and she learns that she can have a troubled past but still be happy. Secondly, she has found somewhere that feels like home and that she loves. She has found a place where people love her and she is not lost.

Author's Message

Anyone can make a difference. Think of someone in your life that has changed you, teached you to grow, inspired you, they have made a difference. Maybe even a book, or movie, or even a thought. And then you, you inspire others, help them to grow. Everyone is connected, start small and you can always make a difference.

I hear people say'you can make a difference'. I know it's true, but I just can't imagine how. Well, I can, but I don't know where to start. After I read 'Hope Was Here' I found that it is true that anyone can make a difference. All you need is a motivation, a commitment, and teamwork. I realized that you don't have to change the world to make a difference. Each and every one of you makes a difference, we all impact each other, we all inspire each other... even if we didn't try or even realize. Looking at something from a different angle, can make something seem easier, not as impossible. 'Hope Was Here' definitely proved this to me, and I hope I can prove this to you and make a difference!

I think that the author was trying to pass this message on to everyone, but I think that not all the readers will interpret it in the same way. It depends on who you are, what your reflections on life are, your interpretations of writing... Also, there are other messages, that could stand out more for you, like: fight for what's wrong even when it seems impossible, hope is always there, honesty is always best, live for every day like it's your last, stick to what you have and quite a number of others.

Good for the Soul
By Alpha Reader
Hope's mother was meant to be a waitress more than a parent. That's why after Hope was born prematurely, she left Hope with her aunt Addie and never looked back (though she does send Christmas newsletters). Just about the only thing Hope's biological mother left her was a bad name (Tulip) which she has had legally changed... plus a talent for waitressing, and frequent tips on how to get good tips.

Addie has been the best mother a girl could ask for. Her pancakes are legendary, her pies are criminal and her meatloaf is drool-worthy. It's Addie's job to show up at diners that need help, get them back on their feet and then take off for parts unknown again. Which means she has dragged Hope and a U-Haul all around America - and Hope has made friends and said goodbye to them in countless states, always leaving behind the scribbled words `Hope was Here' in some unassuming place.

Now Addie and Hope are coming to Wisconsin, to help out a man called G.T. - owner of the "Welcome Stairways" diner who has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia, and needs a helping hand to keep the restaurant going while he recovers.

But that's not all G.T. needs help with. He figures that since he's dying, he has nothing to lose - so he's taking on the local mayor, Eli Millstone, and the big business Dairy factory and running for local candidacy. G.T. intends to take on the corruption that is rife in town, bring down the tax-evading dairy factory, and Eli who is lining his pockets with dirty dealings.

Helping G.T. accomplish his clean political campaign is young cook, Braverman, who Hope develops a small fascination with. Local pastor and best friend, high school politician called Adam and a slew of small-town customers.

Hope isn't really used to permanency, or trusting people. But since coming to Wisconsin and seeing the integrity with which G.T. is trying to win a hopeless campaign ... well, it's got Hope trying to live up to her very big name.

`Hope Was Here' is a Newbery Honor book, written by Joan Bauer in 2000.

`Hope Was Here' is continuing my love of Newbery Honor books, another sweet gem of the middle-grade readership that I gobbled up in one train ride. The book begins with sixteen-year-old Hope leaving New York behind and heading out to Wisconsin with her adopted mother, Addie, for yet another new food adventure. But when we meet her, Hope is becoming weary of the road and her and Addie's always-changing homes. Hope is feeling particularly disgruntled at this latest move, because it came after their NY diner business partner, Gleason Beal, took off with another waitress and all of Addie's life savings.

Hope is a most interesting character; because when we meet her life has already beaten her down and moulded her some. She admits that it took a short boxing career to punch out her built-up anger at her mother; anger for leaving her as a sick baby, anger for not being the mothering type, anger for still calling her `Tulip' when she changed her name to Hope. After the Gleason Beal debacle, Hope is both saddened but not all that surprised at the betrayal. Here we are meeting a kid who is already world-weary, and if it wasn't for Addie being her constant and comfort, she would have a completely negative outlook on life.

Hope's low-expectations of people are confounded by her having to leave the best ones behind. She finds that making friends is the first step to accepting a new place as home, but having had to leave so many people she loves behind, she has taken to not making promises of seeing them ever again (though she does write them). When we meet her in Wisconsin, she's really feeling down and out;

So, of course, the stickler of `Hope Was Here' is reading Hope change her outlook on life, and try living up to her name. The journey Hope has to go on has an obvious end-result, but it's the way Joan Bauer gets her there that's so darn great.

When Hope and Addie arrive at the "Welcome Stairways" diner, they don't realise they're stepping into brewing political warfare. Diner owner, G.T. is dying and intends to fight against small town corruption with his last breath. He is the embodiment of everything Hope isn't right now - he may not be a permanent fixture of this earth for much longer, but he's intending to do the most he can with what little time he has left. He can't promise people that he'll even be able to complete a full term if elected, but he can show them that he intends to do the best job he can for however long this illness he's battling will let him.

I loved this book. Hope is an exceptional narrator - I sort of see her as this girl who's fighting a grin, so sometimes it looks like she has pursed-lips from sucking on sour grapes so long, but really that grimace is just a smile waiting to break out. Her thoughts sometimes turn dark - when she thinks about the mother that didn't want her, or the people she has had to leave behind - but her namesake is often bigger than her woes and she's this girl who is constantly breaking out in sunshine, despite the rain. I loved her. And I think she's the main reason that, despite being a 16-year-old narrator, Joan Bauer's `Hope Was Here' is a proud middle-grade book.

This one also had me crying buckets by the end - as much for the story as to be leaving behind this cast of characters who I so enjoyed spending a little bit of time with.

This is a beautiful, heartfelt book that asks big life questions in a small-town setting. Hope is one of the best narrators, and Joan Bauer's book is being added to my list of favourite Newbery's

Uh, dad...mom?
By Thad Ward
This is a book about a girl who is rejected by her mother, raised by her aunt and in search of her father. The yearning of every teen who wishes to be loved, held and wanted is in the heart of Hope. Her exterior tuffness is played out well in a diner environment where a thick skin is a job requirement.

Some of the objections posted here I find unfounded. Hope's entire motivation in life is to seek out the love she misses from her MIA Dad while trying to accept her AWOL mother's attitude. She finds comfort in her imaginations about a loving father and ekes out bits of value from her mother's advice about waiting on tables. These two merge as a force that drives her forward in the book. Her head is motivated by her desire to be the best server and her heart by drawing near to a father. It's all there and justifies all her actions.

Oh, there's one other motivation that fills any open gaps, her devotion to her aunt. I found that everything she does is propelled by these.

I too felt a flaw in the book is the simplification of politics. The Mayor character is too flat, the Cheese company is Vadar like. But unlike one reviewer I saw the politics the other way around. Wisconsin can be a very blue state and small local politics is often devoid of real national issues. So I saw these as liberal people grasping for control, using corporations badly. Despite the usual corporate metaphors and our national rhetoric, we all know that dirty machine politics is the sole domain of no one party. Heck, the Dems wrote the book on corporate, government and local domination at Tammany Hall.

But after a momentary bit of labeling, I discarded the cliches. The story transcended party politics. Its about struggle, finding a cause that's worthy and keeping hope alive.

Integrity, love and hope are universal. This book weves these three qualities into a dramatic stroy that touched my family.

Can't wait for the movie version.

Historical Dictionary of the Philippines (Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East), by Artemio R. Guillermo

Asia is one of the most rapidly developing regions in the world, and knowledge of the individual countries is crucial for our understanding of the area. The Republic of the Philippines, composed of a chain of islands in Southeast Asia, became a Spanish colony during the 16th century and was then ceded to the United States following the Spanish-American War. After independence in the 20th century, the Filipino people suffered under the 20-year rule of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos, which ended as a result of a "people power" movement in 1986. Since then, the history of the Philippines has been marked by several more political coups, but a growing economy and democratic elections are increasing stability in the country.

Artemio R. Guillermo covers more than four centuries of Filipino history in this newly expanded and updated third edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Philippines, which contains more than four hundred entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions. An updated introduction with a detailed chronology precedes the dictionary and lays out the current situation in the region, while a comprehensive bibliography at the end of the dictionary leads the reader to additional sources. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Philippines.

About the Author

The Merriam brothers desired a continuity of editorship that would link Noah Webster's efforts with their own editions, so they selected Chauncey A. Goodrich, Webster's son-in-law and literary heir, who had been trained in lexicography by Webster himself, to be their editor in chief. Webster's son William also served as an editor of that first Merriam-Webster dictionary, which was published on September 24, 1847.

Although Webster's work was honored, his big dictionaries had never sold well. The 1828 edition was priced at a whopping $20; in 13 years its 2,500 copies had not sold out. Similarly, the 1841 edition, only slightly more affordable at $15, moved slowly. Assuming that a lower price would increase sales, the Merriams introduced the 1847 edition at $6, and although Webster's heirs initially questioned this move, extraordinary sales that brought them $250,000 in royalties over the ensuing 25 years convinced them that the Merriams' decision had been abundantly sound.

The first Merriam-Webster dictionary was greeted with wide acclaim. President James K. Polk, General Zachary Taylor (hero of the Mexican War and later president himself), 31 U.S. senators, and other prominent people hailed it unreservedly. In 1850 its acceptance as a resource for students began when Massachusetts ordered a copy for every school and New York placed a similar order for 10,000 copies to be used in schools throughout the state. Eventually school use would spread throughout the country. In becoming America's most trusted authority on the English language, Merriam-Webster dictionaries had taken on a role of public responsibility demanded of few other publishing companies.

Significantly Improved Classic
By Daniel L Pratt
This dictionary, MW11 for short, may be the first to list bubkes, coscenarist, or MEGO. Entries now appear in a sans-serif font, basically an improvement, though the abbreviation for Illinois looks absurd.
The cover claims 10,000 new words and meanings, including long ball, peloton, rabbit-eared bandicoot (who would seek that under r rather than b?), dance card, megapixel, qi, ki. So what is missing from the previous edition, MW10? An informal survey of a half dozen pages shows that practically nothing of value is gone (lonelily, pein, Daoist are deleted). Changes include a few new senses, illustrative quotes, revised definitions, and antedatings. The entry for -er now shows beautifuller with double l, in concord with the entry for -ful. There are about 70 more pages; MW10 had only about 5 more than MW9.
The total number of entries should be greeted with skepticism. There are about a thousand undefined entries in a list of "non-" words, more than a thousand in the un- list, and several thousand more in sixteen additional lists. If it occurs to you to seek coscenarist in the co- list, these lists might be of use. There are also a great many highly technical terms, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetate(s); writings that might contain these are apt to contain quite a few terms not found in this or any similar dictionary. Nonetheless, MW11 looks pretty good after a comparison of a few random pages of this dictionary with the corresponding parts of four similarly-priced dictionaries. At least two competitors have such entries as blank endorsement, blankety-blank, terra alba, or blague, but most or all omit such MW11 entries as: term of art, blanket chest, or the adjective terminate. Recently I found the word Atropos in a 1950 New-Zealand/British novel; it's not in MW11 (except in atropine's etymology), but was found in the competitors; on the other hand, only MW11 offers an explanation of what people who quirk this or that in a (usually) British novel are doing.
Definitions are sometimes a little unclear. The 85-word definition for gyroscope is apt to set your head spinning, and you may need to reread it to determine a gyroscope's purpose (I'm not sure it says). There's a sensible usage note for "hopefully", but MW11's appeal to "disjuncts" is less likely to persuade than the competitors' references to "sentence adverbs" or something similar. Many more illustrative examples would help.
One appendix contains foreign words and phrases; it's unclear why "a la mode" or Weltschmerz are in the main listing with "a la page" or Weltbild in the appendix. Other appendices list biographic and geographic entries, so, confronted with an unfamiliar proper noun, you may be unsure where to look. Gretna Green, is that biographical or geographical? (Neither, but MW11 has it nonetheless.) These appendices suit the publisher, since during MW11's life there will be new censuses that affect the geographic entries and deaths, elections, awards, etc., that affect the biographic entries, and Merriam can reset the relatively few pages of the appendices more easily than many pages of the main listing. Nonetheless, it is inconvenient for the user.
The final page contains the addresses for the Language Research Service. The introduction to MW10 informed us that there is no evidence for the form "merer", so years ago I sent the LRS their first citation; it happens that OED provided another, and an Internet search for "even merer" provides four more, but MW11's introduction still claims that there is no evidence for it. LRS is better at providing information; it gave me a Robert Frost citation to accompany my grandaunt's expression "the cat wanted the guest to make of her".
A nice feature is the date of earliest known appearance for each word. MW11 extends this to words like "jehu" that come from a proper name (less clear is why Jehu is in the main listing rather than the biographical appendix), though possibly the date applies to Jehu rather than jehu. Similarly, the date for clueless applies to its literal use, not to the modern idiomatic use whose date might interest you. Definitions are given in date order, so you can usually see how meanings develop over time. Most unfamiliar words have only a single definition, or the unfamiliar meaning you seek may be the oldest, so this is a win-win feature for the user.
The dictionary comes with a wonderful CD (optional at higher price), with which many objections disappear. It is much harder to find coscenarist, bo, ked, or Gretna Green with the print edition than with the CD, which incidentally expands abbreviations. You can locate all entries having a usage note containing the word Scottish. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an easy way to search for all occurrences of Scottish in definitions, etymologies, and usage notes simultaneously, though there is a cumbersome way to do this with an advanced search. It seems pronunciations aren't searchable beyond rhymes and homophones, so for example you cannot find all words with the rare sound that ends "smooth", or all pronunciations marked with the obelus (division sign) that indicates controversy. (Merriam is invited to add the obelus to the first pronunciation of bruschetta, which deviates from the Italian.) With the CD you can also find the other 27-letter single-word entry, the longest word(s) with no repeated letter, the anagrams of abcdeflos or Minnesota, or all words whose earliest known appearance falls in a particular year (the most recent appears to be 2000, for tanga, the Tajiki "cent"); if solving crosswords, you can find words of the form ?p??m?.
Certainly I would not recommend buying a college dictionary without a CD version. Beyond that it is hard to choose, if you can afford just one. My inclination is that if you are involved in scientific or technical pursuits, this is probably the right one. Otherwise, you may be better off with one of the competitors. I don't recommend owning precisely two dictionaries however; you will need a third as a tiebreak.

Good, but...
By J. Soules
I thought this dictionary was decent and served most of its purposes. The problem with purchasing it over the Internet, though, was that I didn't know if it had all of the features I needed.

Therefore, while it is good and has a great many words with concise definitions, the plurals of the words are not listed. I was astonished by this, since I'd never seen a dictionary before that didn't list the plurals! Of course, this was one of the things I needed in a dictionary in order to help me in my grammar class. So while I have a nice dictionary, I am still shocked about the lack of plurals!

So be forewarned if you are considering this dictionary that if you need plural forms of words, you will not find them in this book!

Kindle Version - Incomplete
By Just a Customer
I recently purchased an I-pad hoping that it would save me some money on college textbooks. It was with great excitement that I downloaded the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary (Kindle Edition). Not only was it less expensive, it seemed ideal in the sense that I could search it using keywords and not by flipping pages. I am taking an editing course and my very first assignment proved to me that I should have purchased the actual text version, as the vast majority of the words I looked up, were nowhere to be found on this version. My instructor's print version contained acronyms and a variety of other words that I simply could not find anywhere on the Kindle version. I felt like an idiot. And these were just the first few words I was required to look up in the very first paragraph. A quick online search brought these words up immediately in the online MW free dictionary. But, I paid for this dictionary and it's supposedly the same version as the print, yet it's incomplete. Save your money and the hassle of having to buy both versions (what I ended up doing after the Kindle version failed to bring any words that I needed to look-up up) and just get it in print. The Kindle version will NOT have the same entries, nor even the entire dictionary including appendixes, keys, legends and reference material.

Rawls's Political Liberalism (Columbia Themes in Philosophy)From Columbia University Press

Widely hailed as one of the most significant works in modern political philosophy, John Rawls's Political Liberalism (1993) defended a powerful vision of society that respects reasonable ways of life, both religious and secular. These core values have never been more critical as anxiety grows over political and religious difference and new restrictions are placed on peaceful protest and individual expression.

This anthology of original essays suggests new, groundbreaking applications of Rawls's work in multiple disciplines and contexts. Thom Brooks, Martha Nussbaum, Onora O'Neill (University of Cambridge), Paul Weithman (University of Notre Dame), Jeremy Waldron (New York University), and Frank Michelman (Harvard University) explore political liberalism's relevance to the challenges of multiculturalism, the relationship between the state and religion, the struggle for political legitimacy, and the capabilities approach. Extending Rawls's progressive thought to the fields of law, economics, and public reason, this book helps advance the project of a free society that thrives despite disagreements over religious and moral views.

Review

The center-piece is Nussbaum's "Introduction" which is the best of its kind - clear, wide-ranging and insightful. The other chapters, all by leading theorists, make distinctive and important contributions. Some remain close to the text while others explore broader implications of Rawls's approach, but all significantly advance our understanding of what Nussbaum rightly calls "one of the most important works of political philosophy of the twentieth century."

(Jon Mandle, University at Albany, State University of New York)

Rawls's Political Liberalism includes essays by distinguished and well-known philosophers and theorists. Martha Nussbaum's introduction is an excellent survey of main themes of Political Liberalism and of the philosophical discussion of it. The other essays, all of them up-to-date, are of very high quality. The essays range across a wide variety of philosophically interesting topics (most of them topics with a nice trail of discussion in the secondary literature, amply commented on in the treatments provided in the various chapters). One main focus of the book is on the myriad ways in which overlapping consensus and political stability (operating together on a terrain of moral pluralism) work together. The book makes a strong and compelling case for the enduring philosophical significance of Political Liberalism.

(Rex Martin, University of Kansas)

The contributors to this jewel of a collection reveal that there remains much to learn by engaging with Rawls's Political Liberalism. By querying the potential international reach of political liberalism, probing its capacity to account for constitutional and legal arrangements, and reexamining its appeal to conceptions of the good, the authors bring to light new aspects of the work's depth.

(Henry S. Richardson, Georgetown University)

These essays by leading political, moral, and legal theorists provide significant interpretations and reassessments of the central ideas of Rawls's Political Liberalism. Martha Nussbaum's introduction is a real service, a must read particularly for those new to the field. Frank Michelman's essay is the best work of its kind on the constitutional specification of the basic liberties, and Jeremy Waldron presents significant new challenges to the idea of public reason. Highly recommended.

(Samuel Freeman, University of Pennsylvania)

Preface Goal, Theme, and Approach

The Internet is profoundly affecting almost all businesses and commerce paradigms. Global competition, industry traditions, laws, and consumer preferences are among the many issues being impacted by e-business. Weekly magazines and newspapers have dedicated large amounts of space to discuss e-business and the new economy. Newspapers publish news about e-business almost every day. However, there is good news and bad news. The good news is many innovative people are constantly creating new and exciting ways to use the Internet to provide novel, efficient, and convenient shopping paradigms as well as streamlining ways for businesses to do business with their partners. The bad news is the most successful e-business sites are at greater risks of being overwhelmed by large numbers of customers who can potentially bring the site operation to a halt. Scalability is then a challenge to the success of e-business. Our primary goal in writing this book was to create a framework in which e-business scalability could be discussed and evaluated.

This book presents a quantitative approach to understanding and analyzing e-business scalability based on a four-level reference model. The four-level model is composed of a business model, a functional model, a customer behavior model, and an IT resource model. This framework is used throughout the book to explain how e-business technologies work and how they impact performance, to characterize and forecast the workload of e-business sites, and to plan their capacity with the use of performance models.

New performance metrics for e-business are presented in the book. Models at the various levels of the reference model are used to represent and understand problems in e-business. These models include customer behavior models (e.g., Customer Behavior Model Graphs and Customer Visit Models), Client/Server Interaction Diagrams, and analytic (e.g., state transition diagrams and queuing networks) and simulation performance models. The combined use of these models provides a framework for assessing and evaluating the scalability of e-business sites.

Many examples derived from real e-business situations are used to illustrate the concepts presented in the book.

Who Should Read This Book

This book can be used by graduate and senior-level computer science students as well as students in e-commerce programs offered by business schools. Students of MBA programs with a concentration in information technology will also benefit from the concepts presented in this book. Many professionals can use this book as a reference or as a way to learn about e-commerce technologies and the quantitative methods used to evaluate and size e-commerce sites. Examples of such professionals include Webmasters of e-commerce sites and ISPs, CIOs, system architects, project managers of e-commerce companies, e-commerce application developers, capacity planners and performance analysts, designers of Internet-based products for e-commerce, and e-commerce consultants.

Book Organization Part I: Modeling for E-Business

Chapter 1 presents a framework for analyzing and designing e-business sites. The framework is based on a four-level model that includes a business model, a functional model, a customer behavior model, and an IT resource model. The chapter discusses various types of electronic markets including various types of business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and consumer-to-consumer markets.

Chapter 2 discusses the motivations for capturing user behavior and presents customer models at various levels. The models presented in this chapter can be used to answer what-if questions at the customer behavior level and can serve as a basis to build models at the resource level. Two types of customer models are presented in this chapter: the Customer Behavior Model Graphs and the Customer Visit Model.

Chapter 3 discusses the anatomy of e-business functions from the logical view point. The chapter describes how software servers interact to implement e-business functions and provides a graphical notation—the Client/Server Interaction Diagrams—to describe these interactions. Several numerical examples illustrate how these diagrams can be used to answer quantitative questions about the execution of e-business functions.

Part II: Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services

Chapter 4 describes the various elements that comprise the IT infrastructure needed to support e-businesses. The discussion includes hardware, software, and networking issues. Multi-tier website architectures, composed of dynamic load balancers, Web servers, application servers, and database servers, are described.

Chapter 5 presents a quantitative analysis of authentication services used in e-business. The chapter shows how the mechanisms and protocols used to support security may impact system performance. Many quantitative examples illustrate the tradeoffs between performance and security. In particular, the chapter analyzes how authentication protocols such as the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, a successor of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, affects performance.

Chapter 6 provides an overview of what happens when one uses a credit card for payment in the physical world. Then, it discusses how Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) allows for credit card payments to take place over the Internet. The chapter describes SET at a high enough level of detail to provide the reader with an overall picture of the protocol as well as its performance implications. The performance of SET transactions is then discussed through various numerical examples. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of other payment services.

Part III: Capacity Planning for E-Business

Chapter 7 contains an example-driven description of a capacity planning methodology for e-businesses. The methodology is composed of three planning activities: business and functional planning, customer behavior planning, and IT resource planning. Each of these activities is described in detail and illustrated with examples.

Chapter 8 provides insight and intuition regarding how simple performance models can be constructed, solved, and used in the context of electronic business environments. The fundamentals of performance models are then introduced. These include concepts such as service time, service demand, waiting time, response time, throughput, and performance laws. Scalability analysis techniques based on the study of performance bounds is presented here.

Chapter 9 starts by introducing very simple models. Complexity is progressively introduced and the solution to each model is presented using first principles and intuitive concepts. Two broad categories of models are covered in this chapter: system- and component-level models. System-level models treat the actual system as a black box that receives requests, processes them, and returns the results. Component-level models, based on queuing networks, in which components are represented by queues, allows one to explicitly represent processors, storage subsystems, networks, and routers.

Chapter 10 uses several examples to illustrate the performance impacts of contention for software resources (e.g., threads of a software server, database locks, and semaphores). Performance models that deal with software contention may be based on approximate analytic models or on simulation models. This chapter gives an overview of the techniques used to solve approximations that represent the effects of software contention. To show the impact of software contention, we discuss various results obtained by a combination of simulation and analytic models.

Chapter 11 presents a methodology for characterizing e-business workloads. In particular, the chapter shows how Customer Behavior Model Graphs (CBMGs) and Customer Visit Models (CVMs) can be obtained from HTTP logs and describes methods, based on clustering analysis, to derive small groups of CBMGs or CVMs that accurately represent the workload. The chapter also shows how the parameters for the resource models (e.g., queuing network models) can be derived from customer behavior models. Chapter 12 discusses techniques that can be used to analyze and forecast the demand for e-business sites. The chapter discusses traffic burstiness, traffic patterns in e-business, and forecasting techniques including regression methods, moving averages, and exponential smoothing. Logs of a real e-tailer are used to illustrate the traffic characteristics of an e-business site.

Part IV: Models for Specific E-Business Segments

Chapter 13 illustrates the use of the quantitative methods presented in the book through several examples in the business-to-consumer segment. A hypothetical electronic retailer is described. Then, different planning situations are discussed. In light of the models introduced throughout the book, we show how to tackle the problems and we present their solutions. The goal of the chapter is to guide the reader, in a step-by-step manner, through the model-based solution of a number of e-commerce examples.

Chapter 14 illustrates the use of the quantitative methods presented in the book through several examples in the business-to-business segment. An example of supply-chain integration and made-to-order computers is used to illustrate how capacity planning can be carried out in business-to-business environments. The chapter also shows how business-to-consumer transactions generate business-to-business transactions.

Part V: Summary, Challenges, and Perspectives

Chapter 15 concludes the book with a summary of important points covered in the book, challenges for e-business, and future perspectives. Appendix A contains a glossary of the important terms introduced in the book.

Excellent performance &n capacity approach for app layer
By Mike Tarrani
This is one of a series of books about performance and capacity metrics by the authors. Each of their books covers a specific environment (client/server, mainframes, web services), and each explains the theory, quantitative methods and practical approaches using common tools like Microsoft Excel.
This book's focus is on performance and capacity of applications in the e-commerce infrastructure, and like the other books by the authors, it covers every facet while explaining the what's and why's. More importantly, this book will not overwhelm readers who are rusty in math because the authors weave in refresher material as they go along.
What makes this book valuable is the blend of business and technical topics, particularly in Part I where business models are thoroughly discussed. I personally believe that this material is as important as the more technically focused material in subsequent chapters because it wakes up the technical reader as to why their job of developing scalable solutions is important by linking the technical aspects to business imperatives.
Parts II (Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services) and III (Capacity Planning for E-Business) are the heart of the technical matter, and the chapters systematically dissect each aspect of an e-commerce infrastructure from the application layer point of view. This is where quantitative methods are introduced and where the value of the spreadsheets on the CD ROM increase. Note that there are more up-to-date versions of these spreadsheets on the book's associated website, as well as errata for the book.
Practical considerations that blend the business and technical perspectives are presented in Part IV (Models of Specific E-Business Segments). This chapter consists of case studies that tie together all of the preceding material using real world examples.
Because this book is more focused on performance and capacity at the application and business model layer, you should read the authors' newest book, "Capacity Planning for Web Services: Metrics, Models, and Methods". That book covers the lower level details of the infrastructure
to round out the picture of an end-to-end view of performance and capacity management.

Architecture of E-Business Systems
By Odysseas Pentakalos
Both "old" and "new" economy companies are scrambling to develop e-business systems to take advantage of the Internet revolution. This is the first book in the market to provide a framework that systems architects can use to build scalable solutions or to enhance the user experience of existing systems. There are academic papers that cover related topics at a very abstract level to be of practical use and similarly, there are practical articles that cover very specific topics. This book is a very nice compromise between those two extremes. I found the chapters on characterization of e-business workloads and on the development of performance models to be especially useful.

Scaling for E-business: Technologies, Models, Performance, a
By Harrell J. Van Norman
Best book in print for designing e-business networking systems. This book leads a designer of E-business solutions through the steps necessary to ensure QoS objectives are meet, performance requirements are satisfied, and networks aren't over engineered. As an instructor of E-commerce Network Engineering for the Univeristy of California, I'm familar with current published literature, and there isn't anything out there that compares in clarity and completeness. This is Daniel Menasce's third book on the subject, and his best by far. On my short list of must read books for network engineers and system architects of E-business solutions.

I Hate My Stepbrother (Forbidden Romance), by Emily Whittaker

I hate him. He's a dick. Always trying to rile me up, and I always fall for it. He's rude, arrogant, and he's probably slept with every girl at my school.

But he's so fucking hot. I can't deny that. He's built, he's always bringing girls home, and he can even be kinda charming given the chance.

And I think he wants to fuck me. Which is the last thing I want. But I need to do something about our relationship. Maybe if I just go see him, share a joint maybe...

Hot, steamy, and oh so taboo. A 17,000+ word novella.

Well done step erotica
By Texas reader
Seems this is the author's first published book. I think it's a very good first effort. Usual plot line for stepbrother and sister. This time she starts off being repulsed by her brother's behavior but over time she changes.

I really enjoyed the book but so hated the ending. I think it could have been taken a little further the ending as it is felt a bit unfinished to me. Other than that I truly enjoyed this story and the characters.

Average A Training Diary, by Trevor Edwards

The true story of a young man with no flying experience starting a Royal Air Force pilot course and becoming immersed in a challenging world of hard work and hard play. To qualify, he needs to pass a series of relentlessly intensive courses. Keeping a diary of his progress, he records the acute pressure of the training programme and how this is counterbalanced by the sometimes hilarious social life of his fellow trainee pilots. The training becomes increasingly tense as they take charge of evermore expensive machines. Handling these incorrectly can lead not only to loss of job, but also to loss of life. These young men are not supermen. They behave in the same way as other people of their age. They have bad days at work as everyone does and at times struggle to achieve the required standards. As the diary progresses the work gets harder and the play matches it in energy and fervour. This is the three-year journey of an ordinary man being trained to do an extraordinary job.

Interesting at Times.
By Old Student
As the title says, this 'book' is the diary of a young man going through RAF pilot training, advanced fast jet and weapons training, and operational conversion to the SEPCAT Jaguar during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It ends at the point that the author is declared a fully operational fighter pilot.

All in all, the execution of turning what is undoubtably an interesting diary into a book for the general reader just feels lazy and poorly executed. There are no images or diagrams to help bring the story to life; there's no attempt to create any interesting retrospective narrative around the individual diary entries; and the small number of notes added by the author to provide background are so brief and functional that there's no joy in reading them... none more so than the final note that ends the book - what an anticlimax.

If you were there at the time with Trevor Edwards, then I am sure the book is a wonderful piece of nostalgia. If you're a historian looking to for contemporary texts, then this book will shed light. And if you're a budding RAF pilot who wants to know more about what the training process was like 20 years ago, then reading this is a no brainer.

But if, like me, you're an avid military aviation nut, then there are literally dozens of other books about military fast jet pilot training and operational flying that you could read first.

Not average at all........
By Peter Malby
For students of flight or for those interested in how to make it as one of the RAF's top guns then this is the book for you a 'warts and all' account that mixes humour and hard facts as to how to make it in this tough environment and be the best.Written in an easy relaxed style by the author it's clear that both the book and the author are far from average. A cracking read!

I particularly like the self deprecation in the title
By Adam Smith
I particularly like the self deprecation in the title, as nothing about the author is (or was) average. I found it to be a hugely enjoyable work and can wholeheartedly recommend it for an escapist journey to the RAF in the 80s and 90s.
