With simple chant and bright oil paintings, a bedtime ecological prayer connects a child in his room with all the animal life on the planet: in the forest and the ocean, in ponds and on plains. Insects receive only grudging inclusion ("even the bugs . . . even the ones with really small brains"), but that may be to force the rhyme. The playful pictures in big circular frames show all kinds of creatures, from elephants and hyenas to dogs and birds ("trumpeters, yappers, crowers and yowlers"), which the boy knows are there as he curls up in bed with his cat in his cozy room. The chant is nondenominational, as much lullaby as blessing, and young children will enjoy identifying the animals, the sounds they make, the places they live, and the connections between us all through the night. Bless This House

Leslie Staub has written a creative nondenominational bedtime prayer book for young children. Its rhyming rhythm celebrates all that is near and dear to a child's heart, everything from its home, family, nature, and all God's creatures are seen from the open window of the child's bedroom. Children can always find something to be grateful about, and the simple text in the book helps all the young readers to make that feeling possible. The illustrations are done from the child's perspective of looking out the bedroom window. The author/illustrator uses bright oil colors to achieve keen sense of outdoors and Mother Earth.

Love It!

Since purchasing this book a month ago, my 18 month old daughter has requested every night before bed (and in the morning, a few hours later, mid-afternoon-- ALL THE TIME!). Each time we read it, we discover something new in the illustrations. We like to sing the words to the tune of "Tis A Gift to Be Simple" and come up with our own lyrics too.

My Children's Favorite

This book was given to me at a baby shower and little did I know that four years later it would be tattered and worn from all of the love shown to it! We read this book every night before bed and my 2 and 4 year old kids have it memorized. I even had to record them. It is a darling prayer to hear from their lips.

This is a cute book with some enjoyable characters and interactions. Some of its plot elements feel forced, but it's fun, nonetheless. It's written for a Mormon audience, so some of its references to beliefs and "cultural elements" might not be entirely clear for those not familiar with them. --San Francisco Book Review

About the Author
Lisa McKendrick lives in Lakeland, Florida, in a house that is very boring. It is not haunted or cursed, and there's no hidden treasure buried beneath it (she's checked). After going to school forever, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a master's degree in English. She is the mother of six kids, all of whom love every chance they get to play with their cousins. She is married to Rich McKendrick, a real nice guy who likes to collect flashlights. Clan Destine is her third book.

Very interesting read

The first part was weird for me. I was expecting letters throughout, and then her mom gets nosy and the letters end. That was at the very beginning! Then she goes stupid, I mean super stupid. So, I was annoyed with her thinking and then Sarah shows up. Sarah is what made this a five star book. I loved the idea of a child coming to you beforehand! Loved it! I loved the end too! I wanted an epilogue though, and for her to get along with her mom!

Lighthearted and clean.

As a child Sophie decided she was going to marry her dad. She was determined and unhappy when he told her he was already married and that someday an amazing man would come into her life that she would love more than him. In order to help her on her journey to finding the right man, her father gave her a diary to write letters to her future husband.

The story does a few time skips. The first Sophie is in Italy and comes across her childhood crush. Circumstances are not great and put her into a position to meet Peter, a young man she has an instant bond and attraction to. In fear, she ran from him.

Ten years later Sophie returns home for Christmas. She is successful and on track for her career. This time she has a boyfriend when she and Peter meet again. To make things more interesting, she starts dreaming of her future daughter, who humorously guides her to to making choices for her future.

This book was a light and clean read. I didn't like some of the characters that were part of Sophie's life. I was happy to see some of them go. I also liked that she learned that there are some key characters in life that you can't cut out, no matter how much you want to.

This book makes religious references to the LDS faith.

Not too many letters, but lots of witty banter

I wanted to like this one more than I did. Based on the title, I thought that letters/journals would play a fairly major part of the story, but that aspect was really pretty minor. There was a little too much "insta-love" to be really believable and while I liked Sophia for the most part, I had a hard time seeing what Peter really saw in her, especially with the way she acted a few times. I loved Peter's character, however! And the whole daughter element was a little too strange for me - I thought it really distracted from the realistic nature of the story. I loved the dialogue and banter between the various characters - had me laughing many times!
