Please Read This Book

This is a great little book, honestly I found this book to be more helpful than most books on porn that I've read. I really appreciate Brett for staying true to his convictions as a Christian. The most most helpful piece of information that I took from this book, was not to think of "porn addiction" as an addiction but as sexual junk food. There was a sense of relief in my spirit. Thank you very much for this book, I hope and pray that many more men read this book.

For anyone who is on the fence about porn addiction....

This book helped me sort through a lot of issues I was facing while battling an addiction. It puts things into perspective without using large words and gives you some fundamentals to understand / choose if you think porn is bad or not. Granted the author swings more towards it being bad and explains to you why through out the book. I found it very insightful and has helped me continue to defeat my porn addiction.

It's only 80 ish pages long but it's packed full of good information. I recommend it to anyone who is struggling or wanting to learn more about the harmful effects of porn.

If you like easy reads and want to get away from the heavy stuff, this is a good book. Janet was an a friend of mine, she died recently. Her books range from lite and fluffy to history. This one is lite. But it is good. She has written hundreds of books and you have a variety to chose from.

Credible, helpful resource for new and seasoned bloggers!

I thought that Blog, Inc. was going to be a self-promotional book about Joy's blog mostly, like you see so many bloggers do these days. I could not have been more wrong. I was a skeptic and found that this book is actually an extremely credible, accurate and helpful resource for anyone trying to break into the blogging community, or for bloggers who have been in the blogging ecosystem for years. I have been a (mostly) silent, but ever-fascinated, observer of the blogging community at large. I have started and stopped blogs of my own but will be reinvigorating a new blogging venture in the coming weeks and was curious about this book.

This book not only provides personal interviews with some of the most successful bloggers on the Internet today, but it also offers helpful tips that will either spark an idea for a blog post or spark some further thinking on something you may have thought about before but never fully explored. If nothing else, reading this book will fill you with a new desire to better commit to the blog you started out of love in the first place!

I was expecting a book that wouldn't tell me anything I didn't know already. What I got was a book that gave me a fresh perspective on some of the things I thought I already knew. Knowing that Joy is a hugely successful blogger, her years of experience and successes only add to the credibility of each page. I am enjoying this and thrill myself everytime I write a note in the margins for a blog post idea...which is about every page.

Highly recommend.

When I ordered Joy Cho's book, I was expecting it to be geared towards the beginner level of blogging. However, I devoured that book from front to back, and I soon realized it is both for the starter and the pro. I was taking notes the whole way through. She offers some very practical tips on everything from the start of naming your blog to making it a full time business.

I love how organized and easy the book flows.Other topics she tackles: Blogging Etiquette, Social Networking, SEO, and What to Charge for Sponsorship. These are topics that are hard to find facts and realistic tips on, and every blogger needs guidance with at some point in their experience.

In between chapters there are fantastic Q & A's with successful bloggers that I really enjoyed. Very honest, helpful, and inspiring perspective on their blog journey. It's the best all in one resource for both aspiring bloggers and experience bloggers alike! When I get emails with questions about different aspects of blogging, I will now direct them straight to Joy's book! :)

Comprehensive and entertaining: A guide to anti-aging medicine and strategies

As a person who is aging and a physician who is inundated with requests to treat my patients "low T": I found this book both timely and extremely helpful. It does include so much information, that it really should be read to learn and enjoy--as the author writes comprehensively but with moments of humor--and then to serve as a reference text.
While "Being Mortal" explored the ethics and sociology of aging, Spring Chicken explores the science behind the anti-aging movement as well as the general science and changing beliefs behind the mechanisms of aging and how they might be counteracted or mitigated.
There are a lot of details, but the author's engaging tone makes this book an enjoyable read, despite the plethora of information. The changing attitudes and information add a historical perspective. As the author quotes, science evolves "one funeral at a time."
Ultimately, as I heard the author comment in an NPR interview, he himself found that the only aspects of anti-aging medicine he could implement was to exercise more, eat slightly differently and skip a meal or two. And yet, by presenting excellent information to rebut the anti-aging supplement use, this minimalist approach appears to be more realistic and far safer than buying the supplements hawked by the anti-aging celebrities he profiles.
Some of my patients have fallen into the clutches of "anti-aging" physicians, with off label drug use, and now I have the information they and I need to carefully evaluate the risks and questionable benefits.
An engaging, entertaining and informative book.

That's generally not an issue (I suppose a smart writer could make sure he rounds up enough interviews ...

The material is interesting, but the author is not as knowledgeable about the underlying science as you might expect. If you know a lot about his topic, you quickly realize that the author is relatively new to many of the ideas that he writes about. That's generally not an issue (I suppose a smart writer could make sure he rounds up enough interviews with people who are up to speed on the topics that are covered). So you'll read a lot of interesting material, but occasionally you'll read about some outdated ideas (like eating fat is bad for you). Strangely, the author also injects his political views now and then, likely to be humorous, but it falls flat (e.g., why he adds a comment about woman's "reproductive rights" and equal pay into a book on aging is bizarre).

But if you like the subject matter, it's interesting reading.

spring chicken journalism

This is an engagingly written overview of the fascinating history of the science of ageing. The author deserves credit for maintaining a broad, comprehensive perspective and clearly shows the evolution of thinking in this realm. Unfortunately, as he points out, he is an English major trying to explain physiology and medicine. This explains the clear, readable prose. But there is a tendency to oversimplify and interject sophomoric asides (yikes!) that make the reporting seem less professional. Even the opening scene, which makes the eminent physician Brown-Sequard look like a buffoon in a story that has nothing to do with ageing research, made me wonder if the priority was to entertain or to explain. Then there are the factual errors that are obvious even to a casual reader, raising doubt about the overall accuracy of the content. “A young Elvis Presley” wasn’t being broadcast in the 1920’s; he wasn’t even born. Coronary arteries do not “come off” the heart; they supply it. Anti-inflammatories are not “safer” than Tylenol; they cause many more deaths, mostly from gastric bleeding.
I’ll still give it four stars as a stimulating update on a topic that fascinates and affects us all. At least there are source notes to follow up on some of the more interesting strategies, like intermittent fasting and metformin. The references will come in especially handy when you read about someone suggesting transplant immunosuppressants for age extension!

Master in description of characters

I've read this book several times ( in Dutch). Couperus is one of our best writers of the end of last century. He's a master in describing the feelings of his characters. This book is about a family in the East. It's about the difference between east and west, about the hidden powers of the people surpressed by the Dutch colonial government. It's also about passions and secret relationships. And on top of that it's even a thrilling story. Dutch TV made an adaption a few years ago which was very inspiring. Look for similar books by couperus about the society of The Hague at the turn of the century.It may be difficult to acquire in the States, but it's worth the trouble, because it's a great piece of Dutch literature.

A great read for anybody interested in the mystical East

I've read this book in a different translation, published by Oxford Press Asia - a very careful update on an old translation from England. The book was a great read during a long trip in Indonesia - as the experience of the travels and the book played off each other nicely. It is also a fast read and the occasional lapse into rather very flowery language is easily forgiven as the story moves to a harrowing conclusion. Holland's Joseph Conrad.

Couperus, a major Dutch novelist of the late 19th century, spent time in the Dutch East Indies as a child and later visited as an adult. Labuwangi, the setting for the novel, is modeled on Pasuruan in East Java, where his brother-in-law was Resident. The novel deals mostly with the emotional lives of the Dutch settlers, but it does show, sometimes in very subtle ways, how colonialism was psychologically degrading to the both the Javanese and the Dutch themselves. There isn't much to the story, and its harder to warm up to the some of the characters now than it would have been in 1900, but the novel is still worth a read for its portrayal of colonial life in a small Javanese town at the peak of Dutch imperialism.

This book documents David Chipperfield's most important project to date: the Neues Museum, centerpiece of the Berlin Museumsinsel. a good project but, ....

It is a good project and a job well done. But, it is questionable whether this is a good book or documentation of the project. I don't think so. There are more critical essays than I had expected, which is great. But, the project itself should be documented better. Drawing qualities and photographs are a bit disappointing.
