An Introduction to Hinduism (Introduction to Religion), by Gavin D. Flood

This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India. Dr. Flood traces the development of Hindu traditions from ancient origins and the major deities to the modern world. Hinduism as both a global religion and a form of nationalism are discussed. Emphasis is given to the tantric traditions, which have been so influential; to Hindu ritual, more fundamental than belief or doctrine; and to Dravidian influences. It introduces some debates within contemporary scholarship.

Wonderful book!
By theresa a schupbach-gordon
I'm not a scholar, just someone who is interested in Hinduism and literature such as the Mahabarata, the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas.
This is simply a wonderful book. It's clearly written and answers basic questions in detail such as 'what is Hinduism' and who were the Aryans and did they enter India from Asia or were they a group within India who became a dominant influence on Indian culture. It's very readable, really a pleasure to explore.

Bismarck, by Alan Palmer

At the peak of his eminence, Otto von Bismarck, the statesman who created a unified Germany and who dominated world politics in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, was regarded as a legend rather than an individual.

This comprehensive biography attempts to dissect the myth and find the man behind the mask, to delineate Bismarck’s formidably complex personality.

Alan Palmer traces Bismarck’s early life, his diplomatic and political career, and his phenomenal rise from obscure Junker landowner to the most powerful king’s servant since Richelieu.

Palmer includes many important extracts from Bismarck’s letters, public and private, and the results of recent research.

‘Alan Palmer writes the sort of history that dons did before “accessible” became an insult...Cool, rational, scholarly, literate.’ – Sir John Keegan.

Alan Palmer was head of the History Department at Highgate School from 1953 to 1969 when he gave up his post to concentrate on historical writing and research. His many books include ‘Victory 1918’; ‘The Kaiser’ and ‘Napoleon and Marie Louise’.

Time I'll never get back
By Amazon Customer
This book was so horrible I can't believe that it was meant to be a romance novel. The book starts off with Alessandro coming to stay at the house where Michelle is a housekeeper and for a few days they flirt with each other until Alessandro finally takes Michelle's virginity and leaves the country while she's sleeping.

After Alessandro finds out Michelle's pregnant he totally railroads her and desides he's going to marry her because in his opinion she's immoral because she didn't tell him she was a virgin and all she was looking for was to trap him by having his baby. Alessandro goes on to call the paparzzi to surround Michelle's store so that she has no choice but to back to Italy with him if she ever plans to live without journalist in her face (journalist I should remind you that Alessandro called in the first place) and then threatens to make her lose her job, her home, and to sue for sole custody and deny her any access. At this point in the book I was so disgusted that I felt the need to throw something, and to my horror the story just got worse from there.

Alessandro had a horrible childhood and didn't feel loved by his parents and the author explains this at the end of the story to explain away everything he did to Michelle, but it just made me hate him even more. Michelle also had a bad childhood but she didn't treat people like crap. The author's portrayal of Alessandro was truly disgusting, Alessandro even went as far as to tell Michelle after he told her they were getting married (told not asked)as they are about to go to bed together that he "does not do fidelity." Alessandro was rude and domineering throughout the whole book and decides that he was wrong and he really does "love" Michelle in the last five pages.

I would NOT recommend this book to anyone (or this author if her other books are anything like this one) who likes romances because this defintely not the one for you. Michelle has no self esteem, or the ability to stand up for herself, even going so far as to apologize to Alessandro for getting pregnant (as though it were totally her fault) because of bad publicity it may generate for his company. And Alessandro is an egotistical domineering pig with no thought for anyone's feelings, much less Michelle's.

Dont waste your time!
By reader123
I have to agree with the other two reviewers. This book is bad. Both characters are weak and the storyline drags on with no real plot. I've never read a book by this author before and I will definitely make sure to steer clear in the future.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-This sequel to A Breath of Eyre (Kensington, 2012) finds Emma, 17, returning to boarding school for her junior year after spending a summer with her boyfriend, Gray. He heads to Coast Guard training while she immerses herself in her neglected assigned reading, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Once she is back at school, Emma observes how much many of her friends have changed over the summer and struggles with maintaining a long-distance romance. When she kisses her roommate's boyfriend, Owen, and becomes the recipient of schoolwide scorn, her life begins to echo Hawthorne's novel. The heartbroken teen stumbles upon the world of Hester Prynne and her daughter, Pearl. She interacts with the characters and then returns to her reality, puzzled by what she has seen. References to the first book let readers know that this experience is not new to Emma; she has been sucked into literary realities before. Her visits into the 19th-century story continue, and she learns things about herself and her friends. This knowledge she needs as she deals with the fallout from kissing Owen, her uncertain relationship with Gray, and the gossip surrounding a girl at school who has discovered she's gay. Mature readers who are familiar with the literary references will have a greater appreciation of the conflicts and resolutions. Enough backstory is revealed to make this a stand-alone read.-Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SDĪ±(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
The course of true love hits both the skids as well as the classics reading list in this steamy sequel to A Breath of Eyre (2012). Having benefited from falling into a Bront novel in the previous episode, protagonist Emma finds involuntary excursions into The Scarlet Letter to likewise help mark her own progress through similar (but not rigidly parallel) tempests. These range from discovering the sexual secret that is torturing her prep-school roommate to getting a break-up letter from her hunky hon, Gray, and, on the rebound, being caught—twice—snogging other guys. Mont tucks music into her book (the author closes with an annotated playlist), mean girls who become friends, and an attempted protest of the school’s antigay policies that evolves into an alternative prom. The author cranks up the heavy breathing, too, including a few visits to third base. She also brings events to an upbeat close for Emma with Gray back and repentant, and the dazzling prospect of an upcoming scholarship year overseas. Next stop: Paris and (hint) the Paris Opera. Grades 8-11. --John Peters

Emma's New Parallel Worlds
By Literasaurus
Discerning YA readers who first met Emma Townsend in Eve Marie Mont's, A Breath of Eyre, will enjoy an evolving Emma in her sequel, A Touch of Scarlet. In the first book of the trilogy Emma is a sophomore, and true to its literal meaning, she is both `wise' and `foolish', but very likeable. In the second book Emma is now a junior and we quickly notice her new assertiveness and independence. Without giving away too much, Emma faces two of society's great social challenges: homosexuality and bullying. Emma's continuing story addresses tolerance and respect for others as it mirrors not only her growing acceptance of one of her peers, but also her views on how to eliminate bullying in her own school.

As Emma was transported back in time to the world of Jane Eyre in A Breath of Eyre, this time she is carried back to the world of Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Scarlet Letter. It is the world of the 17th-century Salem Witch Trials. It is the world of the Puritans who had little tolerance for anyone or anything that did not meet their strict religious beliefs. And Emma's school, Lockwood Prep, was built on the site of a Puritan plantation, reminiscent of old Boston and nearby Salem. What a natural conduit back into the world of Hester Prynne!

Ms. Mont does a masterful job of paralleling Emma's modern societal problems at school with her periodic encounters with the intolerance of Puritan Massachusetts. Her liberal use of colorful metaphors add greatly to her ambitious task of comparing the social taboos of the two very different societies and their respective time periods. It makes you ponder whether we have significantly improved as a society in the last few hundred years.

A brilliant sequel to A Breath of Eyre
By Marie L.
Eve Marie Mont's A Touch of Scarlet, sequel to her debut teen novel A Breath of Eyre, catches up with Emma Townsend, who is now in her third year at Lockwood Prep. Emma navigates through the typical events of Junior year, such as PSATs, college visits, prom, etc. Along the way she realigns some old relationships, makes new friends, makes some good choices and a few she may regret. At the book's end, like Hester Prynne, heroine of Hawthorne's A Scarlet Letter, (on which this book is based) Emma emerges as a young woman who has the strength of her convictions. Readers will enjoy seeing changes in some of the other characters from the first book, as they also mature and evolve.
In this second book of her Unbound trilogy, Ms Mont tackles some weighty issues such as social ostracism and teen bullying. There are also plenty of fun passages, surprising developments, and interesting situations that keep the plot moving at a pleasant pace. The writing is fresh, imaginative, and contemporary with a classic twist. I highly recommend A Touch of Scarlet for readers of all ages, and I eagerly await the final volume of the trilogy, A Phantom Enchantment.

A great and much better sequel!
By Juhina & Farah @ Maji Bookshelf
A Touch of Scarlet, from its title, is about The Scarlet Letter. It is not a retelling, far from it, but the main protagonist, Emma, ends up in a parallel world, the one from The Scarlet Letter, by entering a dreamlike state. This happens every time she ends up going near the place where she got struck by lightening (and survived). This book is also set in Emma's boarding school where she is entering as a Junior. The beginning of the book showed us that she is finally in relationship with Gray who was in A Breath of eyre. The plot does not slow down one bit, where there are a lot of romantic anguish concerning our couple along with some possibility of a love triangle, as well as a very surprising yet satisfying ending.

If you guys have read my review of A Breath of Eyre you would know that I enjoyed it but wasn't that impressed by it. Even with that I thought I would give A Touch of Scarlet a try and I am glad I did. In a Touch of Scarlet, you really feel that the characters are wearing an extra layer, whether it be emotional baggage or finding a friend in a person you least expected it from. Emma and Michelle's friendship was strained and challenged throughout the novel but at the same time new friendships were formed from two of the "fearsome four" in A Breath of Eyre, if you guys remember them, they are basically Emma and Michelle's mortal enemies. I love that Eve allowed us to find the good in some of these people and that they could repent for their wrongdoings and aren't all a bunch of heartless mean girls, though the other half of that crew proved just that. As for Emma and Gray, I just have to say that I was very disappointed in how Gray handled the relationship and felt very sorry for Emma. I felt that Gray, at 19, was too immature and made some decisions that you could tell were stupid from a mile away. However the star in this book is Emma; she was forgiving, a good friend, and wasn't the type that was consumed by any relationship troubles she was facing.

You are all wondering where The Scarlet Letter fits into all this, unlike A Breath of Eyre, Emma didn't spend as much time in the parallel world. I honestly REALLY appreciated that because I was more concerned with the development of Emma's actual life. The Scarlet Letter was more like a guiding hand, steering her in the right direction as well as opening her heart and mind to the things around her. A Touch of Scarlet
