Not great. What did you expect?

Graphic novel adaptations are very hard to do well. A tremendous amount of work goes into making one, so publishers can only afford to do so for really popular novels. One of the things that is often lost in the process is the pacing. What may take up 2-3 pages in the novel, takes 3-5 pages in the graphic novel (especially if you want to pause for dramatic effect). In order to fit the most important elements in an adaptation half the size of the original work, a lot of key scenes and transitions are cut or rushed. As a result, graphic novel adaptations are never nearly as good as their original novels. This brings me to my review of this Ender's Game graphic novel adaptation.

-For people attempting to read the graphic novel first

Don't. You will struggle just to follow along and not be able to appreciate the story at all. People who ignore this suggestion will be constantly trying to figure out who the different characters are, get confused in game scenes and not understand the rules, get lost (since the first half of the story jumps around between settings without transitions), and not be able to comprehend the significance of many scenes and therefore be unimpressed with the overall story. This is because the author needed to cut several things to fit everything in and therefore had no choice but to cut crucial transitions and explanations.

One of my biggest quirks about this graphic novel is that all the characters look alike since they all share the same stoic expressions, hair color/styles, and skin color in dim lighting--which is extremely confusing, considering most of the story is cast in a dim light. This will only cause further confusion to an already baffled reader.

Honestly, I highly recommend you read the original Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet) novel first, since you were motivated enough to look up the graphic novel and read this review. It's a page turner and you will not regret it.

-For people who have already read Ender's Game and wish to read the graphic novel

This book is good for a quick review; to relive the experience in a new medium. Nothing more. This book will not win any awards, and it will not be something you would recommend to a friend who has not read the original book. This book has many flaws, but not any more than what you would expect. Below I will explain some of the flaws and inconsistencies of the adaptation.

The adaptation is split uniformly in half to represent two parts: Battle School and Command School. Since Battle School took up most of the original book, and Command School took a small fraction... it's easy to assume that the Battle School half of the book would not do the the original novel justice due to the extensive amount of cuts, and that the Command School half would be better since they could focus more on transitions and details (something the previous half could only dream of doing).

Because of all the necessary cuts in the Battle School half, many of the scenes were very jumpy and hard to follow, many of the characters we're not given proper introductions (if any), and all of the Peter and Valentine scenes were cut. I understand that scenes needed to be cut to be able to fit the story in 120 pages, but I could not believe that they didn't explain the rules to the battle room. Arguably, the most important game in the book where about half of the book's settings takes place in-- they do not bother to elaborate on what it is or how to play it. They only illustrated that you wear suits in an anti-gravity chamber and shoot people (not taking the time to explain what shooting people actually does or how if affects the game). This book would otherwise be incomprehensible if you had not actually read the original novel.

I enjoyed the Command School half a lot more since they were able to take their time and focus more on transitions. The only complaint I have is that there really wasn't any falling action. Ender kills the Formacs, feels bad, and his friends come and they all jokingly plan on going to school on Earth. What about his guilt? What about the egg? The promise to help it hatch? I felt that this was a significant part of the book, and could hardly believe that they cut it.

-The Art

There is no denying that Pasqual Ferry and Frank D'armata are talented artists. Flipping through the book, you will see amazing color tones, effects and details that went into the making of this graphic novel. There is no doubt in my mind that the artwork is a treasure to look upon...and yet I can not give it full marks. I can't tell you if it was the colorist's fault or the artist's...but the characters are hard to differentiate. Everyone looks the same! Due to the dim lighting, everyone's hair and skin color look the same, their faces look the same, and you can barely differentiate one another by haircut. I even had a hard time differentiating Petra, and she's the only female student in the book! To add further confusion, there was a scene where Dink introduces himself in the cafeteria. Then Bernard (who has the same haircut as Dink) comes in unannounced and starts bullying Ender, and Dink suddenly disappears! If I hadn't known the story, I would have thought Dink was a two-faced bully! The next time you see Dink, you think you're meeting him for the first time, since he looks completely different with a different hair color and haircut!

In addition, it's hard to blame them for this, but when everyone is in their suits they are impossible to differentiate between. They tried to color code it a bit, but it was still difficult.

I also felt that the characters themselves, especially in the beginning, were very stiff. They all had emotionless expressions, and were all very shiny. The artist likes working in dim lighting with the light shining upon the characters' faces to make it look 3Dish, but it simply was not my cup of tea.

The final inconsistency were the sizes. Ender is known for being the youngest and shortest launchie in the book, but he is drawn taller than Alai and Shen, and is barely any shorter than his Salamander teammates. Bean is known for being abnormally small, but there are scenes where he is just as tall as his teammates. Minor, but important details.

Overall, this book is just as good as what you can expect from a graphic novel adaptation of a popular book. For me who has read the original Ender's Game, it was a satisfactory way to recall the events that happened in the book-- but not something I would recommend.

This graphic novel would be difficult to follow without having seen the movie. But the movie would be pretty difficult to follow without reading the book. The book really is the best way to digest this incredible story. I've probably reread Ender's Game more than any other book. And it's lead me to read the spin-off sequels and parallel books. But I loved going through the graphic novel version and comparing the visual here with what my imagination created when I read this book as a teenager. I liked how the graphic novel was able to focus on things that the movie had to gloss over. I feel it did more justice to the original story than the movie. But I can appreciate the different perspectives I'm able to get from all three formats. In the end, I'll reiterate that I would think the graphic novel would be difficult to keep up with without having experience the movie or the book. Don't substitute this adaptation for the book. But hats off to Chris Yost and Marvel for taking on this series and giving it a new platform on which to be experienced.

About the Author
Skip Downing is an international consultant in the field of faculty development and student success strategies. Dr. Downing has earned degrees from Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Santa Monica, and Carnegie Mellon University. He holds advanced degrees in both English and counseling psychology. He was professor of English at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) for 32 years. In addition to his role as an academic instructor, Dr. Downing created and coordinated BCCC's Student Success and Learning Community Programs. These programs teach students how to apply proven success strategies to achieve their full potential in college and in life. The College Success Program resulted in a significant increase in both student academic success and retention. Dr. Downing has made numerous presentations at national conferences and conducted faculty development workshops at many two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. Dr. Downing's teaching, writing, and consulting are all guided by his belief that the greatest mission of any educational institution is to empower its students to live rich, fulfilling lives. Since 1996, he has facilitated the On Course Workshops, intensive four-day retreats for college educators focusing on proven strategies for helping students become active, responsible partners in their education and achieve greater success in college and in life.

This should be the first text a college student is required to read

Beginning with the inside of the front cover which lists differences between "successful student" and "struggling student", this book is filled with information which will improve the performance of any student in college. While this should be on the "must read" for summer reading of new college students, it would be useful as a review and ways to improve for any student. There is a self-assessment tool which would point the student to areas of strengths and weaknesses found in the back of Chapter 1. By addressing areas of weaknesses first, this 300+ page book can be broken down to specific chapters. Once the student realizes the results of implementing the suggestions, it will be easy to incorporate the rest of the chapters into the reading schedule. Selected chapters address accepting personal responsibility (chapter 2), discovering self-motivation (chapter 3), and self-awareness (chapter 6).

This volume could be used in the freshman curriculum or bits incorporated into introductory courses already in place. I can see this being included as part of an introduction to psychology class. While the title addresses college, the lessons include topics which are relevant to success in life both during and after one's formal education.

Parts of this could, and should, be used in high school classes for those students who are motivated and wanting to further develop their academic and leadership skills.

I recommend placing a copy of this in every new student's trunk which is being packed for that adventure called "college".

Best book I've read on how to succeed in college and life!

As an educator, this is the book I wish I had written. The author is a great coach, persuasively urging readers to make wise choices that will change the outcome of their lives both in college and in life. I highly recommend this book to teachers and students alike.

You have got to be kidding me!

Maybe it was because the book was a required text for an English class, and I thought that inappropriate, but I really did not like this book. Maybe it is because I am not a person who is able to have a serious conversation with my inner critic and then analyze the listening style of that that imaginary voice. I went into the course with an open mind, but after so many patronizing Dr.Phil-after-a-ripping-bong-hit style Journey Entry assignments, I was tired of having my time wasted. (The margins contain many Oprah quotes, so if you are a fan, dig in.) If you need a therapist, get a therapist. If you must have a book to help you succeed in life, try Seven Habits by Covey.

About the Author
Diane Trister Dodge, founder and president of Teaching Strategies, Inc., is the author of numerous books, articles, and training materials on early childhood education. She is the lead author on all of Teaching Strategies books, including the popular The Creative Curriculum�...series.
After earning a Master's degree from Bank Street College of Education, Diane earned 30 years of experience working with teachers and administrators first as a kindergarten teacher, and then as the education coordinator for a Head Start program in rural Mississippi. Her experiences in the field have taught her the value of curriculum and training materials that articulate a clear philosophy and practical approach to meaningful learning. Her belief that curriculum and assessment are intracately linked led to the development of The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5. She has also written many books for parents including Building Your Baby's Brain, Reading Right from the Start, and A Parent's Guide to Early Childhood Education.
Diane is a renowned speaker and trainer, and a former member of the Governing Board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). She currently serves on the Board of the Center for the Child Care Work Force and other local Washington, DC organizations.

Laura J. Colker is the author of numerous articles and books on early childhood education. At Teaching Strategies, she has co-authored The Creative Curriculum for Infants & Toddlers, The Creative Curriculum for Preschool and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5. Great Book!

THis is one of the best books for helping a teacher to set up a classroom. It has lists of things to place in areas of your room. It has a great lay out of interest areas. I love the way it reads like a text book, it helps to be straight forward! I really love the fact that it leans more towards a play based center. Great tools also. Such as daily lesson plans and weekly planning forms.

It will break down each area in easy to understand and follow chapters. It has helped me with room arrangement ideas! I wsa reminded of things I used to have but phased out and really needed to bring back, open art area, home like feel to the room and lots of added toys to each area.

Good Book to learn from

This is a good book, but it would have been nice to receive a hardback book like I ordered. This was the second time ordering a HARDBACK book and getting a paperback copy. Very upsetting. I have sent it back twice now.

Best buy for my money!

I am very pleased with my purchases of books for early learning. The classes I was enrolled in were expensive enough, I saved a lot of $ by ordering amazon. They said like new, They all looked NEW to me. very, very pleased and this is the only way I would ever purchase a book again. I would highly recommend it.
