About the Author
Ellis has always loved staging adventures in her head before going to sleep each night. When she was twelve, she started putting these adventures on paper. For the next twenty years, she wrote with varying degrees of seriousness, but always as a hobby. In that time, she fell in love with Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut, the original Star Trek series, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. Science fiction became her favorite domain to work in, but she also enjoyed reading fantasy, horror, Western, and detective stories, and incorporating their elements into her work. One of her favorite things to do was make people laugh. Ellis denied being a writer for decades. But then she sold articles to The Daily WTF, and a short story to Analog Science Fiction and Fact. After quitting her full-time job to finish her first novel, it was time to own up to writing as her calling. She's currently an editor at The Daily WTF, and having the time of her life writing fiction the rest of the time.

BLOODS FORCE is worthy of YOUR attention..

Ellis Morning; may a very special, and warm, karma surround you for your newest effort, Volume One (BLOODS FORCE) of the *Blood and Starship" duology. It's a book that baits a reader with page one or two and sets the hook in next few pages. This makes one want to keep reading until finished; literally, a book one doesn't want to put down. I started reading in the afternoon and skipped supper to read the rest of Vol 1 of the author's smoothly woven adventure..

To all: I'm 71 and an avid reader of all genres. I give you my personal assurance; BLOODS FORCE is worthy of YOUR attention.. and being read sooner rather than later. --Shy

Great characters in an intriguing setting

Blood's Force is an intriguing mix of future and past - knights errant and barons and adepts, who live on different planets and visit one another using spaceships and technology that they largely don't understand. It was all left behind by the mysterious Shipbuilders, who are mostly lost to history, as most of humanity has retreated into superstition and medieval mindsets.

Now, our hero Jess finds herself roped into a quest on an unfamiliar planet, where she finds more layers of mystery that need solving. She knows quite a bit about Shipbuilder technology, but can't let others know, lest she be accused of witchcraft. Jess finds herself in a quest-within-a-quest, while on a secret race against time to rescue a marooned mentor.

I greatly enjoyed this book. I'm a sucker for sci-fi anyway, but the characters drew me in as much as the setting. There was one in particular that was a real "love to hate him" type that was used very effectively. I liked the way the reader starts from zero, and finds things out at the same speed as Jess does. As I got down to just a few pages left and things were still heating up, I knew I was going to be looking forward to a sequel. Great stuff...can't wait for book two!

Swords and Starships, a winning combination

Set in the far future, Blood's Force is a fun questing adventure that blends science fiction and medieval fantasy beautifully. The characters are interesting and scenarios believable. The action is fast-paced moving toward an important discovery under the threat of epic conflict. But as with all great sci-fi, the setting provides a flexible and intelligent framework for exploring deeper social constructs.

This book is very enjoyable and I look forward to the next adventure.

Since I was previously asked, I will add that this book is probably appropriate for age 10 and up. Nothing inappropriate for younger readers, but they'll likely miss a lot of the background themes.

The diaries and letters of women on the overland trails in the mid- to late nineteenth century are treasured documents. These eleven selections drawn from the multivolume Covered Wagon Women series present the best first-person trail accounts penned by women in their teens who traveled west between 1846 and 1898. Ranging in age from eleven to nineteen, unmarried and without children of their own, these diarists had experiences different from those of older women who carried heavier responsibilities with them on the trail.

These letters and diaries reflect both the unique perspective of youthful optimism and the experiences common among all female emigrants. The young women write of friendship and family, trail hardships, and explorations such as visits to Indian gravesites. Some like Sallie Hester even write of enjoying the company of men, and many speculate about marriage prospects. Domestic roles did not define the girls’ trail experience; only the four oldest in this collection recorded helping with chores. As they journey through Indian lands, these writers show that even their youth did not prevent them from holding notions of white racial superiority.

Two of the selections are newly published, having appeared only in limited-distribution collector’s editions of the original series. For all readers captivated by the first Best of Covered Wagon Women collection, this new volume’s focus on youthful travelers adds a fresh perspective to life on the trail.

Kenneth L. Holmes (1914–95) was Professor of History at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth. He edited and compiled the eleven volumes of the Covered Wagon Women series.

Melody M. Miyamoto Walters is Professor of History at Collin College, McKinney, Texas. Her articles have appeared in Overland Journal and the Journal of Documentary Editing and in the Encyclopedia of Immigration and Migration in the American West.

Lucien is back, but it's Roger & Angela that'll steal your heart!

I’m a huge fan of this author and her De Montforte series so when this little gem showed up on Amazon, it was a no brainer I had to read it.

Lucien de Montforte, the Duke of Blackheath is a meddler and a matchmaker so it’s not a great surprise to me that he’s up to his old tricks once more with his best friend and his cousin. He uses an old portrait as a bait for his invited guests, Sir Roger and Angela.

And although I loved visiting with Lucien and Eva, I actually adored the visiting couple. Both have distinctive personalities and traits that the other is weary of, yet both are feeling the attraction for each other and are in a quandary about how to best handle it.

If you’ve never read this author, here is a perfect little gem for you to savor her wonderful writing voice, prose and characterization. This sweet, sensual and utterly fun story is sure to bring you couple of hours of joy and have you grabbing her FREE offer of the first book of her De Montforte Brothers series The Wilde One. And once you read that story, well, you’ll be hooked for life!

SWEET And Deep Novella

Lucien De Montforte, Duke of Blackheath is at it again...meddling in the love life of those around him. Fortunately for his friend Fox and distant cousin Angela, his meddling is driven by his need to play Cupid for those around him. Don't tell him I told you that, it would just go to His Grace's head.

Fox is haunted by his sister's death on Christmas Day three years ago. Angela is a widower whose husband died after a fall during a hunt. The coincidence? Used to bring them together is a DeMontforte ancestors painting, with an amazing resemblance to Angela, that Fox has had a crush on for eons. It's meant to be and fitting that Angela can heal Fox's hurt soul at Christmastime.

Heartwarming Novella, A Christmas Miracle...Del Montforte Style!

On a cold, snowy Christmas Eve, two lonely individuals- both on their way to spend Christmas at Blackheath Castle, but neither knowing the other, find themselves stranded in a roadside inn for the night. Unusual circumstances, however, forced an early introduction. Sir Roger Foxcote, Esquire, best friend to Lucien Del Montforte, was not feeling the Christmas spirit, for he was mourning the loss of his little sister, three years past. For Sir Roger, Christmas was a time that he wanted to just forget. He had settled in his room with a bottle of brandy to wait out the night. It was the arrival of the other guest, the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, to the little inn, that set the night on its ear. A fight ensued downstairs over her alleged horse thievery. From her perspective, she had rescued an abused horse from its owner. The owner didn't see things that way and was demanding recompense and justice. Knowing that Sir Roger, the local magistrate was upstairs in his inn, the innkeeper brought Sir Roger downstairs, away from his brandy and into the middle of the 'horse fray.' Sir Roger, thinking to end the argument in an even-handed way, and avoid for the lady what he felt would be a much more costly punishment of Horse Thievery, required her to purchase the horse, paying a sum that she found outrageous. He was unaware of her poor financial circumstances, and totally unaware that she, too, would be on her way to the Duke of Blackhealth's home, as an invited guest the next morning. As a result of this exchange, the Lady Twyford found Sir Roger insufferable. Sir Roger found the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, for all of her five and twenty years...shrewish. Both hoped they never saw the other again.

When the Dowager Baroness of Twyford, cousin to Lucien, arrived at Blackheath castle, it follows that Lucien is up to his old matchmaking tricks again. He and his Duchess (now his accomplice to his schemes) both agree that Angel (the Dowager Baroness) and Sir Roger could be good together. She is a widow with little to no money, and in need of someone who could love her. Sir Roger, as it happens is in love with a portrait of one of Lucien and Angel's ancestresses - who looks just like Angel. It could work, they think. But they are unaware of the circumstances of the prior meeting.

There is a painting of Angel's great, great, great, great-something x great grandmother- who looks exactly like Angel. Roger has always loved that painting. The plan is Lucien's. Lucien plans to give the painting of that relative to Angel in hopes that Roger can transfer his infatuation to the living and breathing human being and fall in love. Lucien wants his best friend to be happy And he wants his cousin to be happy. However, when the two meet at dinner, Sir Roger explodes upon figuring out what Lucien is up to, and proposes to leave. Angel plans to leave at sunrise to collect her new 'horse.' Lucien begins to manipulate things. Lucien impresses upon Sir Roger that it would be the gentlemanly thing to do, if he could at least go and help her get the horse from the inn, making sure the innkeeper doesn't take advantage of her financially.

Lucien keeps his hands in things, to be sure...and interest begins to take place between the two. But is it enough? Because of his recent infatuation, Angel isn't sure she can take a chance on Roger. Can he love her, or will he always love the picture of her ancestor?

This story is a real test of Lucien's talents. It is a story of hope, love and trust. It's a heartwarming story that gives two people reason to believe in Christmas miracles. I found that once I started reading, I did not want to put the story down. When the story ended, I found myself wanting more, but not regretting that this story ended. I wanted to read more of the Del Montfortes. I wanted to read more of Lucien's fun exploits - and I cannot wait to see what his young Augustus becomes! Danelle Hamon has developed a wonderful family of characters that we, her readers, have come to know. We look forward to their adventures!

About the Author

H. Lynn Erickson, Ed.D., is an independent consultant assisting schools and districts with concept-based curriculum design and instruction. During the past 20 years Lynn has worked extensively with K-12 teachers and administrators on the design of classroom and district level curricula aligned to academic standards and national requirements. She was a consultant to the International Baccalaureate Organization for the development of the Middle Years Programme―the Next Chapter.

Lynn is the author of three best-selling books, Stirring the Head, Heart and Soul: Redefining Curriculum and Instruction, 3rd edition �2008; Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching Beyond the Facts, �2002; and Transitioning to Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction: How to Bring Content and Process Together, co-authored with Dr. Lois Lanning, � 2014, Corwin Press Publishers. This publication, co-authored with Lois Lanning and Rachel French is the 2nd edition of Lynn’s popular� book, Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom: Teaching Beyond the Facts. The Geneva based watch manufacture of Vacheron Constantin has been continuously making high grade, beautiful watches since 1755 so one would expect horological collectors to be quite knowledgeable about its history and product line. But while most horological enthusiasts have a vague familiarity with the brand, and know it has a high reputation few could cite specific examples. It seems that Vacheron has concentrated on making great timekeepers rather than relentlessly beating the public relations drum.
But in the summer of 2011 they showed a small selection of the best watches they produced over the centuries for two months at a gorgeous exhibit at the National Museum of Singapore. For all those of us who missed the show, thankfully the exhibit was documented in a comprehensive and well produced published catalog.
On first sight the book may appear as just one more `coffee table picture book' of beautiful watches, but because this was a thoughtfully put together exhibit, in reality its catalog became a thorough and interesting pictorial history of the brand, equally captivating to neophytes and serious students of horological history.

The bulk of the book (pages 39 to 211) is the catalog proper, structured like the exhibit into two times four chapters: Four dedicated to functional aspects of timekeepers (Timekeeping, Complications, Specific Needs, Design), and four focusing on specialized watch decorator trades: the Engraver (the artisan of matter), the Guillocheur (the artisan of relief), the Jeweler (the artisan of light), and the Enamaler (the artisan of color). Each chapter has only one page of text, the rest is just images with their short descriptive captions. 158 watches are shown on, typically one, but sometimes two to a page. Mostly there is only one image per watch, but sometimes as many as three or four, but movements are very rarely shown. Images are reproduced at 100 to 200% of the size of the objects. The short image captions provide exact dimensions, caliber information, year of manufacturing and a few words on technical details or artistic details. The experience of browsing the book is very much like visiting a well labeled, well lighted museum exhibition of fine watches.
The 37 pages preceding the catalog itself include a few short essays on the firm's history and the history of watchmaking in the city of Geneva.

This reviewer would have loved to visit this exhibit in Singapore (and hopes it will be restaged elsewhere later) but feels that owning the book must closely emulate the live experience. The quality of the photography and of the printing is superb. This book is a good value and it appears as if the brand has subsidized the publication to make it affordable

All too often the prestigious watch brands use lots of fancy words to hype their products, and it is refreshing to see Vacheron Constantin let its horological masterworks speak for themselves.

A Must-Have For Winter Fun

This is a delightful book full of great ideas for winter fun. You can capture and keep a snowflake, make ice spikes, ice ribbons and other great ideas. The book outlines fun games, like snow mazes, snow launchers, wacky snow creations, and many more. All sorts of winter Olympic games are outlined with instructions for making your own equipment. The final chapter rounds out the snow experience with children's recipes, including snow candy and snow ice cream.
This is a must-have book for winter fun. Children in cold country everywhere will enjoy the ideas in this book. My grandchildren will have lots of fun trying these ideas.

Great snow fun for families

What I liked about this book:
First, it gives kids fun, outdoor alternatives to being stuck inside playing videos games when you can do so many fun things in the snow.
Second, this paperback is made from high quality paper, with really neat illustrations.
Third, the author put together a wide range of activities, play, experiments, building tunnels and forts, crafts, etc. I really enjoyed the mix of old-time activities that people my age and older did long years ago.
Fourth, the first chapter is "Safety in the Snow." Having the right gear makes all the difference between having fun and being miserable. The one exception I would make is using plastic bags if you don't have water-proof boots. This only lasts about an hour. Plastic keeps your feet dry but it doesn't breathe. Feet start to sweat and they can become just as cold as if the plastic wasn't there. We found that if you wear a pair of cotton socks under the wool socks they will absorb a lot of the sweat, but if you're going to be outside for more than an hour or two it would be better to invest in good boots.
Most of all, I liked the bits of history the author threw in about the origins of skiing, and snowshoes; and tidbits about the coldest city in the world. Brrrrr, no thank you.
All in all, you really get your money's worth out of this book. For best results, play with your kids. A lot of these activities take prior preparation and adult skill.

I'm finally excited for winter!

I am not a winter loving person. I detest being cold, but my kids love being outside, having fun in the snow. I jumped on the chance to review this one, because I was excited to find some great ideas on things to do in the snow that just might get me out there with the kids this coming winter.

I love the way this book is geared towards kids. Right up front, it's explained clearly how important it is to dress right for the weather and why. I also love the explanation given about what snow is. Once this is all clear, the fun begins.

There are multiple games and activities, and even some recipes, given to thoroughly enjoy the winter outdoors. Each activity or game has a list of materials needed (if materials are needed) and step-by-step instructions to fully enjoy the event. This is a great way for a newbie (or children) to figure out how to do it. There are also some fun little activities and tidbits in the book, such as the coldest city in the world and a word search.

I'm excited to try the ice ribbons and the homemade snowshoes. My daughter was just asking the other day if we could make snowshoes and I was happy to see some directions included in this book on how to do it. This winter is definitely going to be the most fun we've had yet!

My youngest is obsessed with Mike Trout. This book is very well written and he has had no problems with it being too much for him. It is full of interesting info and he has been running to me every half hour or so to tell me something new that he learned about his baseball favorite.

The content is good, but this is not what I expected

Is this book supposed to have color photos?
The digital preview is in color, but the physical book I received is in black and white. This is quite disappointing. The content is good, but this is not what I expected, especially after seeing the color in the preview.
