Secrets of a Wedding Night~
By Lisa Wolff
This was a very engaging, delightful debut! Five years ago Lily and Devon fell in love and were determined to be together until Lily believed Devon left her and, in turn, Devon thought Lily left him for a wealthy earl and had led him on a merry chase. Now widowed and penniless, Lily sees an announcement for Devon and his newly betrothed wealthy heiress, Lily decides to pen a scandalous pamphlet that scares off Devon's fiancee. Knowing Lily is behind this act, Devon confronts her and tells her he will show her a true wedding night, as surely her husband failed. However, Lily is hiding a little secret and she is determined to resist Devon...or maybe she should seduce him? What follows is a sexy battle of wills that keeps getting wrenches thrown into it--a bet, Lily's sister, Devon's gambling and the refusal of either party to tell the truth of their current situations and their shared past.

Valerie Bowman is now on my auto-buy list with this debut and I am already anxious for the next two books which will feature her sister and then the man who becomes her dear friend (he is very proper and I can't wait to see him fall). The main reason I don't bump this up to a five star read is the fact Lily and Devon just can not talk to each other. It is always frustrating to me as a reader when the couple don't just clear the air and move on, yet I know for the story it needed to be held in for quite some time so its a hard balance. Lily is smart, protective, kind, loyal and has some spunk that flairs up after being called predictable. Devon is sexy (yum), confident, strong and stubborn and together they make a very sexy, fun couple. I did find it a bit odd that we did not see anything that was written in the pamphlet. Usually when a scandalous bit of gossip is written, we as the reader get to see some of that but it wasn't a big deal, just different :) So while parts of the story frustrated me just a tad, the writing and pacing was excellent. I loved all the characters and I am looking forward to catching up with them again. I loved the chemistry between Lily and Devon and Devon certainly delivers on his promise about showing Lily a proper wedding night! Overall, a splendid debut full of wit, emotion, heat and love. 4 1/2 stars

Simply delightful!
By K. Buckley
It's been many a year since I last read a historical fiction romance novel. I tend to drift in and out of genres and currently I am obsessed with British crime fiction. However, I love to discover new authors and the reviews and buzz about this book were sufficiently positive so I put down my Reginald Hill and picked up a Valerie Bowman. What a charming book! It definitely leaves me anticipating the sequel. The dialog is very witty, the characters are people you'd like to know; there was enough misunderstanding between the two main characters to cause tension but not so much as to be ridiculous and frustrating, as in some romance novels. Ms. Bowman set up the sequel well, giving the main character's younger sister enough dimension to make you want to know her story. And let's not be coy - the sex scenes were HOT. If I'd had a fan, I would have snapped it open and fluttered it. I am so excited about this new author and hope she has a long and prolific career.

A pleasing debut
By mary.t.
I am always on the lookout for new historical authors and was eager to read Ms Bowmans debut as the blurb sounded amazing. The actual book had all the ingredients, a handsome hero with lots of secrets and a beautiful heroine with lots of secrets etc etc. My only complaint was that somehow it all did not quite come together and the romance was not quite fleshed out..Oh yes lots of things were happening but maybe there were too many.. for example the explanation about the hero's son was sort of rushed., we never get to see or understand what was in the scandalous pamphlet clearly, the ending was dragged on a bit and the chemistry between H/h was lacking in some places. All this being said, it did hold my attention and I think the author has a lot of potential and I look forward to her next book.

Most kids know well the Disney versions of 101 Dalmatians, but few are familiar with Dodie Smith's original novel of the same name published in 1956. Now comes the audio interpretation, read with just the right amount of sophistication, exuberance and humor by British actor Martin Jarvis.

The first and still the best
By Chrijeff
The live-action Disney version of this book was the pits. The animated version wasn't bad at all (I own it). But the book is better than either of them. And, like all the best kids' books, this one, though written for 8-14's, can still be enjoyed when you're way past childhood.
Disney necessarily simplified the story and characters for his movie versions, cutting out a lot of the subtle characterization and background that makes the book seem so completely plausible. Here, instead of "Roger and Anita," we have "the Dearlys," a businessman and his bride, who are "owned" by Pongo and--not Perdita, but "Missis"--and have not one "Nanny" but two, "Nanny Cook" (a real cook) and "Nanny Butler" (a real butler). We learn of Cruella deVil's sinister family history, her furrier husband (never mentioned in the films), and her obsession with furs. We learn that her employees, the Baddun Brothers, dream of appearing on "What's My Crime?" Many of the Pongos' pups--Lucky, Patch, Cadpig, Roly--are fleshed out as they never were on the screen. The sheepdog Colonel is less of a buffoon and more a shrewd strategist. The drama of the puppies' births and early lives is much better portrayed, as is the journey of Pongo and Missis to Suffolk to rescue their stolen family, with introductions to the dogs that help them on their way--the hospitable Golden Retriever, the aged Spaniel and his "pet," 90-year-old Sir Charles, the flighty Irish Setter whose efforts come to naught through a fire, and the tough Staffordshire who occupies the moving van the Dalmatians board to shorten their homeward trip. Cruella's white Persian cat is here too--a clever animal "biding her time" as she waits for the opportunity to settle the score for her drowned litters--and so is the sheepdog's "pet," two-year-old Tommy Tompkins, who lends his toy hay-cart to the army of London-bound dogs. Yet despite a certain anthropomorphization, all the animals are recognizably animals; they behave as such and don't do anything you couldn't visualize such creatures doing. The humor is much more subtle than in the films, no doubt reflecting Smith's British personality. There are episodes like the brief rest in a country church and the Dalmatians' revenge against Cruella that would have made great theater. I still enjoy the animated version, but I keep coming back to the book.

Better than the movie
By ...Loggie...
This book is wonderful. When Disney changed it into a movie, the story lost many of its special touches, and the story was no longer told so much as shown from the dog's perspective.

The main plot of the story is similar to that of Disney's animated movie, but contains many small differences, and more detail. These differences are what make the book as good as it is. In the book, right after Pongo and his wife Missus Pongo have their 15 puppies, everyone is worried about how one dog will feed 15 puppies without losing strength. The solution to their problem comes in the form of a stray Dalmatian, found on the side of the road, whom they name Perdita. Perdita has a history of her own, and her sub-plot is one of the many things that add depth to the story, but were lost in the movie.

The story is told, continuously, from a dog's point of view. It is mentioned how humans believe that they own dogs; whereas the truth is that the dogs own them. Pongo and Missus continually refer to their humans as their pets, and one can see that mentality in their conversations. All the dogs in the story seem to enjoy doting on their humans. Another interesting quirk is how the dogs are `married'. Pongo continually refers to Missus as his wife, and she calls him husband. A dog's marriage ceremony does not seem to take very long, or require a priest or government official. Two willing dogs can run off into the forest, and when they come back, be married. Puppies will most likely come soon after.

Throughout the book are scattered illustrations. These pictures are done in black, white, and shades of grey, and look like well-shade pencil drawings. They are beautiful, and very life-like.

A wonderful book, it is much better than Disney's movie. Full of fun tales, even in the midst of the puppies flight from Cruella's house.

A review for the parents, with some dog advice
By Lilly Flora
I won my tattered, dog eared, Disyned-fied copy of "100 Dalmatians" in a school auction when I was 7 years old. I learned to read late because I'm dyslexic (hence any bad spelling you may notice) so this was the first real chapter book that I ever owned and the very first I read.

It was great. This is a fabulous novel for all ages but especially for kids. I'm not going to re-hash the plot because I think the whole world knows it by now. The themes of good parenting, loyalty, and of course, good, intelligent, kind dogs are things that every child should learn. It is true that this book contains some talk of puppy killing, which didn't disturb me, and I'm guessing that today's 7 year olds wouldn't be scared by it either.

Another reason to read, or let your child read this book is that it will encourage a love of dogs, and having grown up with dogs every minute of my life, I can tell you having one (or more) helps immensely in all kinds of situations, social and otherwise. It provides an example of love and loyalty, as well as the responsibility involved in feeding and caring for a dog. However on that note Dalmatians, contrary to the lovable Pongo, Missus and Perdita in this book, do not make good dogs for children. They don't have the temperament for it. If you read this book and decide to get a dog for your child (an excellent idea) I recommend a good old fashioned mutt (they're smarter because they're not inbred) or a border collie, which can actually be trained to be nannies for children because of their sheep herding instincts.

Anyway, five stars. Great for the whole family, and an excellent way to encourage reading in a child of any age. At 18 years old I still love reading this book. And the sequel, "The Twilight Barking" isn't half bad either.

THERE ARE REASONS WE FEAR THE NIGHT. HE'S NOT ONE OF THEM.

Bill Ryder was a dateless geek, but then he met a girl to die for. So he did. Unfortunately for him, that was just the beginning of his troubles. He awoke as a vampire, one of the legendary predators of the night. Sadly, fangs or not, he was still at the bottom of the food chain.

Now he finds himself surrounded by creatures stronger, deadlier, and a lot cooler than he is ... and they all want to kick his teeth in.

Bill isn't exactly average, though. A vampire like him hasn't been seen in centuries. He's got a few tricks up his sleeve, unlikely allies, and an attitude that makes him too damn obnoxious to quit.

Join him in this hilarious tale of immortal monsters and the unlikely hero who's not afraid to tell them off, even if it gets him killed - permanently this time.

----------

Bill The Vampire is book one in the bestselling Tome of Bill urban fantasy series.

If you enjoy The Dresden Files or The Iron Druid Chronicles then you're likely in for a bloody good time.

From the Author
This is the first volume in the Tome of Bill comedy / horror series - my attempt at bringing the vampire genre back from the dark brooding place it's been for the past several years. It's time to make the undead fun again.

Welcome to the story of Bill Ryder, a wise-cracking, sharp-tongued geek who just can't take the supernatural world too seriously. It's action, adventure and lots of politically incorrect laughs. If you're a fan of Army of Darkness or Big Trouble in Little China then you're in the right place.
Writing these books puts a huge smile on my face. I sincerely hope you have as much fun reading them.

The Tome of Bill currently includes:
Bill the Vampire (book 1)
Scary Dead Things (book 2)
The Mourning Woods (book 3)
Holier Than Thou (book 4)
Goddamned Freaky Monsters (book 5)

Sunset Strip: A Tale From The Tome Of Bill
The Tome of Bill Compendium (vol 1) - Books 1-4 of the series in one collection for those who wish to follow the adventure and save a few bucks in the process.

Bill The Vampire Jock
By Gustav Bertram
If you're thinking of buying this, I strongly suggest trying the free sample first to see if it is to your taste. I thought this would be a book for geeks, by a geek. It's not.

Bill is not a nerd. Bill can't remember his D&D character class (battlemage or swordmage, hmmmm?). Bill buys nonexistent D&D books. Bill says things like Blade-the-vampire-hunter. Nobody says Blade-the-vampire-hunter. They just say Blade. Blade has three movies, and just how many other Blades can you think of exactly, Bill?

Bill is a jock. Bill calls women bitches, men dicks, and is more than a little homophobic. Bill thinks about rape a disturbing amount. Bill regularly gets really drunk. Bill thinks that his friend raving about finding a cool collectible is "psycho obsessive". Bill recognizes the machines in the gym. Bill punches people in the junk. Bill hates MIT.

In conclusion, the dialogue reads like a frat boy trying to imitate a nerd. To be fair, the dialogue improves somewhat about halfway through the book, when Bill's internal monologue features less. By improve, I mean that there's slightly less overt swearing and homophobia. The misogyny is still pretty strong.

Many of the characters sound more or less the same, to the point that different characters make the same "I just told you something untrue. Psych! It wasn't true after all. I gotcha, didn't I?" joke.

The Darkwing Duck line was funny. It's a pity that almost nothing else was.

Fun to read
By N. Valente
Bill is not exactly Indiana Jones but he does manage to stumble his way to success in a similar manner. Albeit with much more swearing than Indy. Still, despite a tough start the character does build as the plot progresses, and gets strong enough that you forget that he and his friends are blood-thirsty killers. Written in a "Howard Stern" kind of voice, Bill dialog from brain-to-mouth with no filters, but still manages to deliver some very funny lines and gets more introspective as the story evolves. In the end he became fleshed-out enough for me to want to read the next tome about Bill. Sally, Bill's "frenimey", is witty, snarky and adds a great deal to the story, and in many ways is a more interesting character than Bill himself. I'm hoping his character matures past his current mental age of 13 in future books. All in all a great read, even for someone who really does not like Vampire books.

A Tour de Farce!
By Mike Burton
What can I say about Bill the Vampire? ROTFLMAO! Imagine if you will, your local technically minded, slightly overweight individual (geek) gets turned into a vampire by a super hot chick (Bitch!) and then has to deal with a coven of vampires that looks like they just stepped out of a Tommy Hilfiger ad. The lead vampire hates his guts and wants him out of the picture as soon as possible and the gal who turned him has an agenda all her own and won't give him the basic skills to survive as a vampire. Add to that the companionship of two equally strange roommates that nothing can faze, vampire rules that are completely different than what's been passed around and a vampire singeing Transformer and you have the strange tale of how Bill the vampire became Dr. Death!

Liberally greased with modern nerd in-jokes and a severe disrespect for "glittery" vampires, this book is the perfect vampire tale for the 21st century adult that needs a good laugh. Not your average vampire, Bill will become your new vampire friend with something funny to say in the middle of the worst possible situations.

There are only a few typos and incorrectly phrased sentences (due to spellcheck), but none of them are distracting enough to slow down or disturb the pace of the book. The characters are all fleshed out to a tee, and Bill and his roomies are hilarious. I can't wait to see what kind of high jinx Bill and Sally get into in the next book.

I received a free copy for review.

Slave Species of the Gods: The Secret History of the Anunnaki and Their Mission on Earth, by Michael Tellinger

Our origins as a slave species and the Anunnaki legacy in our DNA

• Reveals compelling new archaeological and genetic evidence for the engineered origins of the human species, first proposed by Zecharia Sitchin in The 12th Planet

• Shows how the Anunnaki created us using pieces of their own DNA, controlling our physical and mental capabilities by inactivating their more advanced DNA

• Identifies a recently discovered complex of sophisticated ruins in South Africa as the city of the Anunnaki leader Enki

Scholars have long believed that the first civilization on Earth emerged in Sumer some 6,000 years ago. However, as Michael Tellinger reveals, the Sumerians and Egyptians inherited their knowledge from an earlier civilization that lived at the southern tip of Africa and began with the arrival of the Anunnaki more than 200,000 years ago. Sent to Earth in search of life-saving gold, these ancient Anunnaki astronauts from the planet Nibiru created the first humans as a slave race to mine gold--thus beginning our global traditions of gold obsession, slavery, and god as dominating master.

Revealing new archaeological and genetic evidence in support of Zecharia Sitchin’s revolutionary work with pre-biblical clay tablets, Tellinger shows how the Anunnaki created us using pieces of their own DNA, controlling our physical and mental capabilities by inactivating their more advanced DNA--which explains why less than 3 percent of our DNA is active. He identifies a recently discovered complex of sophisticated ruins in South Africa, complete with thousands of mines, as the city of Anunnaki leader Enki and explains their lost technologies that used the power of sound as a source of energy. Matching key mythologies of the world’s religions to the Sumerian clay tablet stories on which they are based, he details the actual events behind these tales of direct physical interactions with “god,” concluding with the epic flood--a perennial theme of ancient myth--that wiped out the Anunnaki mining operations.

Tellinger shows that, as humanity awakens to the truth about our origins, we can overcome our programmed animalistic and slave-like nature, tap in to our dormant Anunnaki DNA, and realize the longevity and intelligence of our creators as well as learn the difference between the gods of myth and the true loving God of our universe.

Review
“Throughout the ‘educated’ world the idea of ancient alien intervention is pushing serious academics out of their ivory towers. Michael Tellinger is at the forefront, along with Zecharia Sitchin and Erich von Daniken, bringing us information that will eventually change the way we see ourselves and our place in the cosmos. If you think you knew about DNA manipulation, the Anunnaki, or their secret mission on Earth, you need to read this book and take the next step. This is truly an amazing book that has been well researched.” (Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide, January 2013)

“If you have ever wondered about the age-old questions concerning the human race: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? Answers may be found in Michael Tellinger’s book Slave Species of the Gods. Clearly written, it’s a fast and gripping read that covers everything from biology, science, and history to religion, mythological gods, and ancient astronauts. Don’t miss this one.” (Jim Marrs, author of Rule by Secrecy, Alien Agenda, and Crossfire)

“Michael Tellinger’s groundbreaking work presents evidence that challenges all the conventional major assumptions about human origins and history. Emerging into our true power and significance cannot happen until we realize we are not the pinnacle of God’s creation, not even among the creatures of this Earth.” (MíCeál Ledwith, D.D., LL.D., coauthor of The Orb Project)

“Even if you don’t agree with the conclusions Michael Tellinger draws from the evidence he presents--and I don’t!--this is a well-researched, well-written, and thought-provoking book on a controversial subject, and I applaud it as a contribution to the debate about the mysterious origins of humanity.” (Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods)

“An intriguing, well-researched survey, this comes from a scientist, researcher and widely recognized talk show guest.” (Midwest Book Review, February 2013)

“...a gripping read that you’ll be excited to share with friends.” (Capt. Hugh T Alkemi, Entheoradio, August 2013)

Intriguing ideas
By Galaxie
Interesting ideas. I'm not sure I'm buying it, but love playing 'what if' and I think Michael has at the very least raised some fascinating questions about our collective past. The stone circles in SA are definitely an enigma, and no one else has come close to explaining them. I like his views on our current systems and his ideas for improving our lot. Downfall...some big leaps made on little evidence. He based a lot on Z Sitchin's interpretations of Sumerian texts, and doesn't adequately address the critiques on those translations and the niggling rumours that they are exaggerations, full of mistakes or presented to suit Sitchin's theory. However Michael is very authentic, very passionate on his subject, and I sense a truth behind a lot of what he says even if some of the specifics are a bit stretched. A great read that gets you thinking. I will continue to read his work, and appreciate not only his efforts to uncover truth, but also to expose corruption in our present system and suggestions for alternatives.

Thank you, Michael Tellinger for unlocking this most-important story for me.
By Truth Seeker
I just finished reading “The Lost Book of Enki”, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I credit
the last chapter of Michael Tellinger's book (“Slave Species of the Gods”) as the key
that made it possible for me to comprehend this facinating story.
My skill is not language arts, and I failed in earlier attempts to read “The 12th Planet” or LBOE.
I am amazed that just a few years ago, I could not follow the story in “The 12th Planet” nor could I tolerate the the language in LBOE, and now I am fascinated at the ability of the simple language in LBOE to communicate so efficiently and easily. I consider SSOTG to be a condensation of LBOE. Thank you Michael Tellinger for unlocking this most-important story for me.

Too much rant
By K. C.
Claims his conclusions are absolutely supported by rather feeble evidence. Too much rant, not enough info. Found myself skimming large sections that were repetitive rant. Some interesting info that could indicate the author's theory is right, but not iron clad.
